| Ben: Hey Khru Pim, what do you think about their decision for lunch? |
| Pim: Well Khun Ben, I’d say it was a pretty good choice. You can never go wrong with a rice and curry shop. |
| Ben: I know Thai green curry is pretty famous around the world. Is that the kind of curry they’d serve? |
| Pim: There could be many types of curry. It all depends on the particular shop. Green curry is kind of soupy. They might also have red or yellow soupy curries. But there would probably be some dry curries or mixed stir-fried dishes, too. |
| Ben: Sounds like I might have trouble picking one to eat. |
| Pim: Oh, that’s the best part. You don’t need to choose just one. We usually get two different curries served over a plate of rice. That way you get a variety of flavor. |
| Ben: But is that double the price? |
| Pim: No, it’s usually just a little more to get two curries instead of one. Anyways, these rice and curry shops in Thailand are cheap. You get a whole meal for about one US dollar. |

| Ben: This phrase is used just like the idiom “starving to death” in English. |
| Pim: That’s right. หิว (hǐu) is the adjective “hungry, and ตาย (dtaai) is the verb “to die”. |
| Ben: So the phrase literally means “hungry going to die”. That could be a fun one to use sometime, so let’s practice it. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim. |

| Ben: Are there any other similar phrases? |
| Pim: Well, we have a bunch that ends with จะตาย (jà dtaai). For example, if it is scorching hot outside you can say ร้อนจะตาย (ráawn jà dtaai) |
| Ben: “It’s so hot I’m gonna die!” Ok, and the next phrase is... |
| Pim: ขอบใจจ้ะ (khàawp-jai jâ) |
| Ben: This is just a more informal way of saying ขอบคุณ (khàawp-khun). |
| Pim: Exactly. ขอบใจ (khàawp-jai) is more like “Thanks” in English, while ขอบคุณ (khàawp-khun) is like saying “Thank you”. Remember that we use the more informal polite ending particle จ้ะ jâ with ขอบใจ (khàawp-jai) instead of ครับ (khráp) or ค่ะ (khâ). |
| Ben: And who could you use this with? |
| Pim: You can use ขอบใจจ้ะ (khàawp-jai jâ) when speaking with close friends or inferiors such as younger family members. |
| Ben: I see. And the final phrase we’ll look at is... |
| Pim: เอาไว้ (ao wái) |
| Ben: This means to “keep” or “save” something. |
| Pim: It’s made up of two verbs. เอา (ao) means “to get”, and ไว้ (wái) means “to keep”. The example from the conversation was เอาไว้ก่อนก็ได้ (ao wái gàawn gâaw dâai). |

| Pim: The basic meaning of ความ (khwaam) is “substance” or “matter”. It’s combined with verbs, adverbs, and adjectives to form abstract nouns that convey some concept, such as “heat”, “beauty”, “confidence”, or “prosperity”. |
| Ben: OK. Khru Pim, how about an example for our listeners. |
| Pim: Sure thing Khun Ben. We know that ร้อน ráawn means “hot”, but ความร้อน (khwaam-ráawn) means “heat”. |
| Ben: I see. So basically, putting ความ (khwaam) in front of a descriptive word changes it into a noun. |
| Pim: Exactly. One example from the conversation is ความจริง (khwaam-jing). จริง (jing) means “really” or “true”. So can you guess what ความจริง (khwaam-jing) means? |
| Ben: It must be “reality” or “the truth”. |
| Pim: Good job. Do you want to try to guess some more? |
| Ben: Sure. Go ahead. |
| Pim: รู้สึก (rúu-sùek) means “to feel”. So what is ความรู้สึก (khwaam-rúu-sùek) ? |
| Ben: Is it “feeling”? |
| Pim: That’s right. How about ความเจริญ (khwaam-jà-rooen)? เจริญ (jà-rooen) means “to prosper”. |
| Ben: Then ความเจริญ (khwaam-jà-rooen) must mean “prosperity”. |
| Pim: I think you got the hang of it. |
| Ben: It’s a piece of cake. Now how about a little speaking practice for our listeners. Let’s hear all those terms once more. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim. First was “heat”. |

Thank you very much for your comment and shared your opinion. "khaao raat gaaeng" is really, rice with curry on top. When we talk about "khaao raat gaaeng", we will think about these kind of ready food stand where you can point for what you want on top of your rice, you can also put egg on top of your curry. If you a shop that you walk in tell them what you want like "pat-ga-prao + kai-daao(fried egg)" that we call "aa-hăan dtaam-sàng" made for order restaurant. To only put egg, veggies we would say "sài pàk yoe-yoe / sài kài" which means "add egg / lot of veggies". For both shop, you can order curry to put on top of rice or come in a different plate from rice. Hope that’s help. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help. I thought khaao raat gaaeng was rice with something else on top, maybe vegetable, egg, but not necessarily curry as per the english translation
khaao raat gaaeng gai is how I thought one would order rice and curry
khaao raat gaaeng massaman (with chicken or pork depending on what the stall had)
