| Jing: The Abhidharma, or อภิธรรม à-phí-thaam in Thai, is one of the collections of the Buddha’s teaching. Another thing that I think is different, is Thai people trying not to show sadness at a funeral. |
| Ja: It’s hard not to feel sad when someone you know passes away. |

| Ja: This phrase means “to show sympathy” or “to give condolences”. |

| Ja: แสดง sà-daaeng is the verb “to show”, and ความเสียใจ khwaam sǐia-jai is a noun that means “grief”, “sorrow”, or “regret”. So a more literal translation of the phrase might be “to show grief” or “to display sorrow”. |

| Ja: เสียชีวิต sǐia chii- wít literally means “to lose life”, but it’s used similarly to the English phrase “to pass away”. ด้วย dûuai means “by” or “because of”, and อุบัติเหตุรถชน ù-bàt-dtì-hèet rót chon means “auto accident”. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ อุบัติเหตุ หมายความว่า “accident” และคำว่า รถชน หมายความว่า “car crash”. |
| Ja: OK, so once again, what is the whole phrase “to die in an auto accident”? |

| Ja: This phrase means “to do the chanting of the Higher Doctrine for the dead”. |
| Jing: ใชค่ะ We were just talking about อภิธรรม à-phí-thaam in the introduction. |
| Ja: So อภิธรรม à-phí-thaam actually comes from the Sanskrit word Abhidharma, and it’s called the “higher doctrine” because it deals with a complicated philosophical analysis of all phenomena. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ อภิธรรม นั้นยากที่จะทำความเข้าใจแม้กระทั่งพระสงฆ์เองก็ตามนะคะ |
| Ja: This phrase also had the word สวด sùuat, which means “chanting” or “praying”. And the last part of the phrase is the word ศพ sòp, which means “corpse”. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ คนที่ตายไปแล้วเราจะไม่เรียกเขาว่า “คน” หรือ “person” แต่จะเรียกว่า “ศพ” หมายความว่า “corpse” or “body”. |
| Ja: เข้าใจใจแล้วค่ะ งั้นเรามาต่อกันที่ Grammar กันเลยนะคะ Okay, now onto the grammar. |
| GRAMMAR POINT |
| Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using “คิดซะว่า khít-sá-wâa” to say "Think of it as..." |
| Jing: คิด khít is the verb “to think”, and ว่า wâa is the particle “that”. |
| Ja: So the phrase คิดซะว่า khít-sá-wâa can be used when you want to say “Just think that...” or “Think of it as...” It is used as a way to put something in perspective. |
| Jing: ใช่เลยค่ะ เราใช้คำว่า “คิดซะว่า” เพื่อพูดให้กำลังใจคนที่กำลังคิดในด้านลบให้กลับมาคิดในด้านบวกค่ะ |

| Ja: OK, so you mean because of his karma, his time on earth was up. |

| Ja: Can you give us another example of how to use คิดซะว่า khít-sá-wâa in a sentence? |

| Ja: “Think of the rain on your wedding day as a blessing from heaven.” Let’s look at this sentence in parts as well. |

| Ja: “Rain falling on your wedding day...” |
| Jing: เป็นพรจากสวรรค์ |
| Ja: “...is a blessing from heaven.” So because we can’t control the weather, it’s better to think about a rainy day on your wedding as something positive instead of getting upset by it, right? |
