| Ja: This phrase means "answering to make yourself look good". |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ |
| Ja: This phrase is actually a little bit unusual because it has five verbs all in a row. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ In Thai the five verbs are ทำ เป็น ตอบ ให้ ดู |
| Ja: And in English they mean "to do", "to be", "to answer", "to let", and "to see". We can understand the use of all these verbs if we translate the sentence to English as "What you are doing is answering in a way that lets you look good." |
| Jing: ประโยคในภาษาอังกฤษอาจจะยาวไปหน่อย ฉันคิดว่าประโยคเป็นภาษาไทยพูดง่ายกว่า |
| Ja: And what was the Thai sentence again? |
| Jing: ทำเป็นตอบให้ดูดี |
| Ja: OK, what's the next phrase? |
| Jing: “ออกตัวปกป้อง àawk dtuua bpòk-bpâwng” |
| Ja: This phrase means "to defend". |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ คำว่า ปกป้องเป็น verb "to protect" หรือ "to defend". และคำว่า ออกตัว แปลว่า "to put out your body". |
| Ja: So the whole phrase “ออกตัวปกป้อง àawk dtuua bpòk-bpâwng” could mean that you are literally stepping out in front of somebody, to protect them from an attacker. |
| Jing: Yes, but we usually use this phrase to talk about defending somebody with your words. |
| Ja: OK, I see. What's the last phrase? |
| Jing: Subject + ว่า wâa ... |
| Ja: We can use this pattern to show what somebody is thinking or to indicate what they said. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ First you name the subject, then use ว่า to connect to a statement. |
| Ja: Can you give us an example of how we can use this? |
| Jing: มีค่ะ ในบทสนทนา โบว์พูดว่า … |
| โบว์ว่าไม่ต้องใส่อะไรเลยก็ได้ค่ะ |
| boo wâa mâi dtâwng sài à-rai looei gâaw dâai khâ. |
| Ja: "I think they don’t need to bother wearing anything at all!" So in this sentence Bow was the speaker, and she's also using her own name for the subject "I", is that right? |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ This way she uses ว่า to show that she's giving her opinion. |
| Ja: So if I wanted to give my opinion about something I could say เบ็นว่า and then some statement. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ You could use any pronoun too, such as ผม, ฉัน, or เรา. |
| Ja: ตอนนี้เรามาดู grammar กันนะคะ Okay, now onto the grammar. |
| GRAMMAR POINT |
| Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using ขนาดนี้ khà-nàat-níi and ขนาดนั้น khà-nàat-nán to say "this much" or "that much". |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ คำว่า ขนาด เป็นคำ noun แปลว่า"size", "magnitude", หรือ "proportion". We can pair this with the adjectives นี้ níi and นั้น nán, which mean "this" and "that". |
| Ja: So that gives us the two expressions "this size" and "that size". |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ คำว่า ขนาดนี้ คือ"this size" และ ขนาดนั้น คือ "that size". But we are not always talking about physical size. |
| Ja: That's a good point. Depending on the context, we might translate ขนาดนี้ khà-nàat-níi as "this much", "this bad", "to this degree", and so on. |
| Jing: คำว่า ขนาดนั้น อาจหมายถึง "that much", ได้เช่นเดียวกัน "that severe", หรือ "like that". ขึ้นอยู่กับ ประโยค |
| Ja: And how exactly do we use these two phrases in a sentence? |
| Jing: โดยปกติจะมีประโยคก่อนหน้า กลุ่มคำว่า ขนาดนี้ หรือ ขนาดนั้น In other words, a statement will usually come before ขนาดนี้ khà-nàat-níi or ขนาดนั้น khà-nàat-nán . For example, in the conversation we heard this sentence... |
