| Ja: Ja Here! Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 12 - It's so soft, it must be Thai silk. In this lesson you'll learn about using the phrases “โทรไป thoo-bpai”, “โทรมา thoo-maa”, “โทรหา thoo-hǎa”, and “โทรออก thoo-àawk” to talk about "calling out", "calling in", “calling for”, and "calling to" by phone. |
| Jing: This conversation takes place at the airport. |
| Ja: It’s between three co-workers - Pong, Bow and Ning. |

| Ja: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Jing: “โทรไม่ติด thoo mâi dtìt” |
| Ja: This phrase means “to call, but the line didn’t connect.” |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ |
| Ja: “โทร thoo” is the verb “to call by phone”. |
| Jing: คำนี้มาจากคำว่า “โทรศัพท์” แปลว่า “telephone”. |
| Ja: And then we have “ไม่ติด mâi dtìt”, which means “to not connect”. |
| Jing: “โทรไม่ติด thoo mâi dtìt” is one example of the pattern... Verb 1 + ไม่ mâi + Verb 2 |
| Ja: And what is the purpose of this pattern? |
| Jing: The second verb shows an unsuccessful result of the first verb. Another example of this pattern is “มองไม่เห็น maawng mâi hěn”. |
| Ja: “to look, but not see.” ค่ะ แล้วกลุ่มคำต่อไปละคะ ครูจิง |
| Jing: “ไปไหนมา bpai nǎi maa” |
| Ja: This phrase means “Where have you been?” |
| Jing: ใช่คะ The literal translation would be “Where did you go and come?” “ไปไหนมา bpai nǎi maa” is used to ask where someone went upon their return. |
| Ja: In English we’d leave out either the verb “to go” or “to come” in order to ask the same thing. So we might say “Where did you go?” or “Where are you coming from?” และกลุ่มคำสุดท้ายที่เราจะได้เรียนกันคืออะไรคะครูจิง |
| Jing: “ช็อปเพลินไปหน่อย cháwp phlooen bpai nàwy” |
| Ja: This phrase means “got absorbed in shopping.” |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ |
| Ja: “ช็อป cháwp” comes from the English word “shopping”. “เพลิน plooen” means “to enjoy” or “to be absorbed”. And “ไปหน่อย bpai nàwy” means “a little too much”. |
| Jing: ดังนั้นความหมายของมันก็คือ “I was enjoying shopping a little too much.” |

| Ja: We can use the verb “โทร thoo” with four other verbs to describe how a call is made. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ Those four verbs are... ไป bpai |
| Ja: “to go” |
| Jing: มา maa |
| Ja: “to come” |
| Jing: หา hǎa |
| Ja: “to look for” |
| Jing: and the last one is ออก àawk. |
| Ja: “to go out” |
| Jing: The verbs “ไป bpai” and “มา maa” are relative to the speaker. |
| Ja: Since “ไป bpai” indicates the action moving in a direction away from the speaker, the phrase “โทรไป thoo bpai” would be equivalent to “calling out” or “calling to”. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ มีตัวอย่างการใช้จากบทสนทนาของเราก็คือ... |

| Ja: “I called but nobody picked up the phone.” |
| Jing: The opposite expression is “โทรมา thoo-maa”. It means “to call in”. |
| Ja: “โทรมา thoo-maa” is used when the speaker wants to say that they are receiving a call from someone else. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ สำหรับตัวอย่าง เราสามารถพูดได้ว่า... |

| Ja: “Why didn’t you call?” ค่ะ แล้วคำที่สามละคะ |
| Jing: Next is “โทรหา thoo-hǎa”. This one means “to call for”. |
| Ja: “โทรหา thoo-hǎa” can be used to describe both calling out or receiving a call. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ตัวอย่างหนึ่งจากบทสนทนาของเราก็คือ... |

| Jing: The final verb phrase we have is “โทรออก thoo-àawk”, which means “to call out”. |
| Ja: You would use it to say that you are making an outgoing call from a phone. Can you think of a good example of how to use this, Khru Jing? |
