| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Ben: Hey Khru Jing, it sounds like Ploy is really struggling to wake up early enough to offer food to the monks. |
| Jing: Yeah, you really have to get up pretty early to do that. But it’s not so hard to do. In the old days, people would wake up super early and cook food especially for the monks, but these days it is much easier. |
| Ben: How is it easier? |
| Jing: You can just go near the market, or on certain streets where people know the monks will go. There you can find tables with food already cooked. Each set is about 20 baht and usually includes some cooked rice and a few curries or other dishes. |
| Ben: Do you just pour it all into the monk’s bowl? |
| Jing: Well, they used to do it more like that in the old days, but now all the different dishes come in little plastic bags. I know it’s not the best thing for the environment to use so much plastic. |
| Ben: But at least you are doing a good deed by supporting the monks. |
| Jing: That’s right! |

| Jing: ฮัลโหล han-lǒo |
| Ben: This is simply the Thai pronunciation of the English greeting “Hello”. |
| Jing: Yeah, that’s right. We usually use this when answering the telephone. |
| Ben: Alright, what’s the next phrase? |
| Jing: โทรมา thoo maa |
| Ben: This means “to call” or “to phone”. |
| Jing: โทร thoo comes from the word for “telephone”, โทรศัพท์ thoo-rá-sàp. And มา maa is the verb “to come”. It shows the direction of the action is moving towards the speaker. |
| Ben: I see. So it’s like saying “to phone in”. |
| Jing: Yes, that’s pretty much what it means. |
| Ben: Well what if you are not phoning in? What if you were “calling out”? |
| Jing: Oh, in that case you use the verb ไป bpai, meaning “to go” instead. Then you have the phrase โทรไป thoo-bpai. |
| Ben: And that means “to phone out”. |
| Jing: Right. |
| Ben: And the next phrase is... |
| Jing: ตายจริง dtaai jing |
| Ben: This is just an interjection showing surprise like “Oh my God!”, “Oh no!”, or “What on earth!” |
| Jing: Yeah, something like that. |
| Ben: And what is the last phrase we want to look at? |
| Jing: อย่าให้เสียความตั้งใจ yàa hâi sǐia khwaam-dtâng-jai |
| Ben: This means “Don’t give up on your intention.” |
| Jing: Exactly. อย่าให้ yàa hâi means “don’t let”, and เสีย sǐia means “to be spoiled” or “to be ruined”. Then the last word, ความตั้งใจ khwaam-dtâng-jai, is a noun meaning “intention” or “determination”. |
| Ben: So the whole phrase gives us “Don’t allow your intention to be ruined.” |
| Jing: Right. |
| Ben: OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section. |

| Ben: OK, is there anything else we should know about using ตั้งใจ dtâng-jai? |
| Jing: Often ตั้งใจ dtâng-jai is followed directly by ว่า wâa, meaning “that”. |
| Ben: I see. So if you have ตั้งใจว่า dtâng-jai wâa it means “to intend that”. |
| Jing: That’s correct. |
| Ben: Did we have any examples of this usage in the conversation? |
| Jing: Yes, we did. Ploy said...พลอยตั้งใจว่าจะตื่นเช้าไปตักบาตร |

| Ben: “I wanted to wake up early to go offer food to the monks!” |

| Ben: “intended that I will get up early”. |
| Jing: That’s right. |
| Ben: OK, so just to sum up, ตั้งใจ dtâng-jai followed by a verb means “intend to” do that action. |
| Jing: And if we have ตั้งใจว่า dtâng-jai wâa followed by a verb it means “intend that” you will do the action. |
