Intro

Hi everyone.
Welcome to The Ultimate Thai Pronunciation Guide.
You've made it to the last lesson! Do you feel more confident about speaking in Thai now?
In this last lesson, we'll wrap things up by quizzing you on the material that we've covered in this series.
Let's practice!
Make sure to practice out loud with this lesson!
You know all the parts and pieces, but can you speak Thai with a natural accent?
If you've been quiet up until now, be sure to speak out loud with Jay!
Are you ready? Let's go!
You probably knew this word before you started this series, but do you know how to pronounce it correctly?
Give it a shot!
ป่า forest
Did you pronounce this sound correctly?
Remember, Thai contrasts between a hard B, an unaspirated P, and an aspirated P. This example uses an unaspirated P sound like the P in 'spin'. Listen to it again.
ป่า
We covered this sound back in lesson 5.
Let's move on to the next one.
How would you pronounce these words?
ชื่อ name
Did you pronounce the vowels correctly? One of the vowel sounds doesn't exist in English. It's the 'unrounded U'. You want to make a U sound, but instead of rounding your lips, try spreading them instead.
Listen to it again.
ชื่อ
We covered this sound back in lesson 3.
What about these words?
ร้าน store
ร้านค้า shops
เดิน walk
เดินทาง journey
Remember, compound words generally have the long vowel shortened in the beginning syllable because it's unstressed.
Listen to them again.
ร้าน store
ร้านค้า shops
เดิน walk
เดินทาง journey
OK. Here's the last one. See if you can identify all the tones.
สวัสดีค่ะ ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักค่ะ Hello, Nice to meet you.
Could you identify all the tones? The first syllable is a low tone, the third syllable is a mid tone, the fourth syllable is a high tone, and the seventh tone is a falling tone.
Listen to it again.
สวัสดีค่ะ ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักค่ะ Hello, Nice to meet you.
We learned about tones in lesson 8. So if you struggled a bit with that sentence, go back to that lesson to review the material!

Outro

How did it go? Do you feel like you have a better accent than you did at the beginning of this series?
What parts of Thai Pronunciation are still difficult for you?
Good luck as you continue learning Thai! Bye!

Hello Alexander St. John,

Thank you. Are you talk about ร้านค้า shops? "Tone marker is falling" this rule changed if initial consonants are low class consonants like it is in this two-word ร้าน and ค้า. Here is the rule "low class initial consonants" + máai-èek ( ่) = falling tone / máa-thoo ( ้) = high tone. Please let me know if you talked about different words.

Have a good day.

I don't see how the fourth syllable is a high tone, since it is short and the tone marker is falling.

Alright, so the video is wrong then? At 2:21, the video says that ค่ะ has a high tone, which is what confused me and made me ask my question.

Hello Evan,

Thank you. ค่ะ is falling tone. To turn it into high tone, we have to get rid of tone mark above it. คะ will be high tone, used at the end of a sentences when women ask questions ...คะ or end a statement with ....นะคะ Hope that helps. Please feel free to let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a good day.

I'm confused about ค่ะ. Why is it a high tone? Should it not be a falling tone since ค is a low-class consonant?

I love all your teachings so far. I'm 58 years old man living in Thailand. This is my second time going through this. I know you guys are being encouraging with your "how'd you do" and "did you struggle with anything"? I feel that I'm going to have to watch this at least 5 times to come close to getting a good score. I'm not giving up.

Where do you have a lesson teaching consonant classes?

สวัสดีค่ะ เดวิด

ขอบคุณค่ะ I think you confuse between tone and tone mark. Check out Thaialphabet made easy 25 videos series to understand more about how they different. Here is the link : https://www.thaipod101.com/lesson-library/thai-alphabet-made-easy/

สวัสดี 3 syllables = ส and it's hidden vowel สะ first syllable is low tone , วัส and it hidden (หวัด middle class or high class consonant which will effected it tone) second syllable is low tone and ดี last syllable midtone

ค่ะ = falling tone ยิน mid tone ดี mid tone ที่ falling tone ได้ fallinf tone รู้ high tone จัก Low tone ค่ะ falling tone. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a good day.

Regarding the final part, viewers are advised to watch part 8 in the pronunciation series (https://www.thaipod101.com/lesson/ultimate-thai-pronunciation-guide-8-thai-tones/?lp=55) if they have difficulty with tones.

I watched all 10 parts in this series, but was unable to successfully find all the tones in สวัสดี ค่ะ ยินดีทีได้รู้จัก ค่ะ. I think that is because I learned to recognize the tonal markers (from part 8), but don't understand the rules for consonant classes, and how those rules affect how Thai script should be read for correct tonal pronunciation.

Where in this 10-part series are consonant classes explained?

เดวิด

@Nik: You said "Learning to speak and pronounce a language properly does not require any reading and writing skills in that new language."

You won't know what pronunciation you're supposed to use until you can read the Thai alphabet, then understand consonant classes, and finally understand tonal markers.

What you're trying to do is like trying to do algebra before you've grasped the basics of adding, subtracting, dividing, and/or multiplying.

You need to take things one step at a time.

@Jeni: the word ป่า / forest was covered in a previous lesson in this series. You would have seen it if you watched the videos in this series in sequence, as I did.

Even if you skipped a video or forgot the term ป่า / forest, it was clearly explained in this video, so I don't see the problem.

I don't understand the final part, where we are told to identify ALL the tones in this sentence: สวัสดี ค่ะ ยินดีทีได้รู้จัก ค่ะ

The only syllables I see with tonal markers are ค่ะ, ได้, รู้, and ค่ะ (once again). All the other syllables have NO tonal markers, so that means they are paired with the unwritten mid tone marker.

So why is it that we are told that the only syllables with tones are:

สวั - low tone

ดี - mid tone

ค่ะ - high tone

ทีไ - falling tone

???

The only one of those syllables with a tonal markers is ค่ะ, which is paired with a falling tone mark.

สวัสดี Christopher,

I'm not sure what exactly you find too advanced, could you please specify? Please note that this is just a short review of what we've learned in the series. There are a total of 9 lessons in this series that introduce each and every core aspect of the Thai language for absolute beginner students. In this 10th lesson, we just have a quick recap of the most important stuff we covered.

Wishing you good luck with your Thai,

เลเว็นเต้ (Levente)

Yep will add what others have said - if following the Ultimate Video Getting Started course then this is too and too advanced - so feels like a sudden jump - ideally should be moved to later in course?

Greetings

Yes like most I am having trouble with the rolling R 😒 Perhaps you can make a full lesson and practice to accomplish this very difficult sound.

Thank you.

ThaiPod101.com

Hello Rebecca,

Thank you for question. I got this from one student suggestion. The R in thai is rolled, like in Spanish. So it is a little more difficult to say. The R sound in common speech is often dropped or changed to R. So in common speech you will hear Khap most of the time. Listen to Thai news and you will hear them using the more proper pronunciations. One example of a word where the R is often changed to L is hot ร้อน. You will mostly hear it said as “lawn” not “rawn” or should I put it as “raawn”. Hope that helps. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a nice day.
