Jessi: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Do you speak Thai?"
Pim: dâai khâ dì-chǎn phûut dâai nít-nàwy khâ
Jessi: "Yes, I speak a little." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dâai khâ dì-chǎn phûut dâai nít-nàwy khâ
{pause}
Jessi: To answer “no, I don’t” in a simple way, just say…
Pim: mǎi dâai khá if you’re a female, and mǎi dâai khráp if you’re a male.
Jessi: Now, let's break down our original response from the beginning. The first word ...
Pim: dâai

Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dâai

Jessi: And next ...
Pim: nít-nàwy
Jessi: meaning "a little."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) nít-nàwy
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: nít-nàwy
{Pause}
Jessi: And next …
Pim: khâ
Jessi: which is the particle that we saw before.
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
Jessi: Now listen to the speaker say "Yes, I speak a little." and then repeat.
Pim: dâai khâ dì-chǎn phûut dâai nít-nàwy khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you would say "Yes, I speak a little." if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English. Remember to also change the final khá to khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you’re a male, and repeat.
Pim: dâai khráp phǒm phûut dâai nít-nàwy khráp
Jessi: To expand the pattern, replace "a little" with "a lot."
Pim: yóe
Jessi: "a lot"
Pim: (slow) yóe (regular) yóe
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "a lot."
Pim: dâai khâ dì-chǎn phûut dâai yóe khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn. Now let’s try it with a masculine version.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "a lot" with "some."
Pim: bâang
Jessi: "some"
Pim: (slow) bâang (regular) bâang
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "some."
Pim: dâai khráp phǒm phûut dâai bâang khráp
Jessi: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace "a lot" with "some." Now say, "Yes, I speak some."
{pause}

Pim: khun phûut phaa-sǎa thai dâai mǎi khá (five seconds) dâai khâ dì-chǎn phûut dâai nít-nàwy khâ
