INTRODUCTION
Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 25: "How much is this?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How much is this?" In Thai, this is...
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài khá
Jessi: The first word in the question is...
Pim: an-níi
Jessi: meaning "this" in English.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) an-níi
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: an-níi
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Pim: raa-khaa
Jessi: meaning "cost, price, to cost"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) raa-khaa
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: raa-khaa
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa
{Pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: thâo-rài
Jessi: meaning "how much"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) thâo-rài
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: thâo-rài
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: khá
Jessi: a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài khá
{pause}
Jessi: Remember to change the final khá to khráp if you're a male speaker. Now, master the following pattern and responses to the question "How much is this?"
Pim: nùeng-ráawy bàat khâ
Jessi: "It's 100 baht." Again slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) nùeng-ráawy bàat khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: nùeng-ráawy
Jessi: meaning "100"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) nùeng-ráawy
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: nùeng-ráawy
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: bàat
Jessi: meaning "baht," which is Thai currency.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) bàat
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: bàat
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: khâ
Jessi: a particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is female.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "It's 100 baht." and then repeat.
Pim: nùeng-ráawy bàat khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you say "It's 100 baht." if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word khá with the word khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you’re a male, and repeat.
Pim: nùeng-ráawy bàat khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "100 baht " with "20 baht."
Pim: yîi-sìip bàat
Jessi: "20 baht"
Pim: (slow) yîi-sìip bàat (regular) yîi-sìip bàat
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "20 baht."
Pim: yîi-sìip bàat khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "100 baht." " Say, "It's 20 baht."
{pause}
Pim: yîi-sìip bàat khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use khráp instead of khâ. So now let’s try it with a male version.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "20 baht" with "2,400 baht."
Pim: sǎawng-phan sìi-ráawy bàat
Jessi: "2,400 baht"
Pim: (slow) sǎawng-phan sìi-ráawy bàat (regular) sǎawng-phan sìi-ráawy bàat
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "2,400 baht."
Pim: sǎawng-phan sìi-ráawy bàat khráp
Jessi: Simply replace "20 baht" and use masculine speech. Say, "It's 2,400 baht."
{pause}
Pim: sǎawng-phan sìi-ráawy bàat khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "2,400 baht" with "59,990 baht."
Pim: hâa-mùuen gâao-phan gâao-ráawy gâao-sìp bàat
Jessi: "59,990 baht"
Pim: (slow) hâa-mùuen gâao-phan gâao-ráawy gâao-sìp bàat (regular) hâa-mùuen gâao-phan gâao-ráawy gâao-sìp bàat
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "59,990 baht."
Pim: hâa-mùuen gâao-phan gâao-ráawy gâao-sìp bàat khráp
Jessi: Simply replace "2,400 baht" and use masculine speech. Say "It's 59,990 baht."
{pause}
Pim: hâa-mùuen gâao-phan gâao-ráawy gâao-sìp bàat khráp
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you how much something is. You want to say that it's 100 baht. Respond to the question.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài khá (five seconds) nùeng-ráawy bàat khâ
Jessi: Now imagine it's 20 baht. Respond to the question.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài khá (five seconds) yîi-sìip bàat khâ
Jessi: Imagine it's a 2,400 baht. Use male speech and answer the speaker's question.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài khá (five seconds) sǎawng-phan sìi-ráawy bàat khráp
Jessi: Now imagine it's 59,990 baht. Use male speech and respond to the question.
Pim: an-níi raa-khaa thâo-rài khá (five seconds) hâa-mùuen gâao-phan gâao-ráawy gâao-sìp bàat khráp
Jessi: Now you want to learn how much something is. Ask the question.

{pause}
