INTRODUCTION
Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 20: "What's the weather like in Bangkok?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What's the weather like in Bangkok?" In Thai, this is...
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yang-ngai khá
Jessi: The first word in the question is...
Pim: aa-gàat
Jessi: meaning "weather" in English.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) aa-gàat
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: aa-gàat
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Pim: thîi
Jessi: meaning "at, to, place, that, which"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) thîi
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: thîi
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi
{Pause}
Jessi: And next...
Pim: grung-thêep
Jessi: meaning "Bangkok"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) grung-thêep
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: grung-thêep
{Pause}
Pim: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep
{pause}
Jessi: And next...
Pim: bpen
Jessi: meaning "to be able to, to be, to be alive"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) bpen
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: bpen
{Pause}
Pim: Listen to the first four words of the question and repeat.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen
{pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: yang-ngai
Jessi: meaning "how"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) yang-ngai
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: yang-ngai
{Pause}
Pim: Listen to the first five words of the question and repeat.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yang-ngai
{pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: khá
Jessi: a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yang-ngai khá
{pause}
Jessi: Remember to change the final khá to khráp if you're a male speaker. Now, master the following pattern and responses to the question "What's the weather like in Bangkok?"
Pim: dàaet jâa khâ
Jessi: "It's sunny." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dàaet jâa khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: dàaet jâa
Jessi: meaning "sunny"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dàaet jâa
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: dàaet jâa
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: khâ
Jessi: a particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "It's sunny." and then repeat.
Pim: dàaet jâa khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you would say “It's sunny.” if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word khá with the word khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you’re a male, and repeat.
Pim: dàaet jâa khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern,replace "sunny" with "cloudy."
Pim: mii mêek mâak
Jessi: "cloudy"
Pim: (slow) mii mêek mâak (regular) mii mêek mâak
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "cloudy."
Pim: mii mêek mâak khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace the word "sunny." Say, "It's cloudy"
{pause}
Pim: mii mêek mâak khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use khráp instead of khâ. So now, let’s try to use it with a male version.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "cloudy" with "clear."
Pim: bplàawt-bpròong
Jessi: "clear"
Pim: (slow) bplàawt-bpròong (regular) bplàawt-bpròong
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "clear."
Pim: bplàawt-bpròong khráp
Jessi: Replace the word "cloudy" and then use male speech. Say, "It's clear."
{pause}
Pim: bplàawt-bpròong khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "clear" with "windy."
Pim: mii lom raaeng
Jessi: "windy"
Pim: (slow) mii lom raaeng (regular) mii lom raaeng
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "windy."
Pim: mii lom raaeng khráp
Jessi: Replace the word for "clear" and then use male speech. Say, "It's windy."
{pause}
Pim: mii lom raaeng khráp
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you "What's the weather like in Bangkok?" You want to say that it's sunny. Respond to the question.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) dàaet jâa khâ
Jessi: Now, you want to say it's cloudy. Respond to the question.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) mii mêek mâak khâ
Jessi: You want to say that it's clear. Use male speech and answer the speaker's question.
Pim: aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) bplàawt-bpròong khráp
Jessi: Now you want to say it's windy. Use male speech and respond to the question.
