You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How tall are you?" In Thai, this is...
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá

Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: khun
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question "How tall are you? is-
Pim: súung
Jessi: meaning "tall"

Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá
{pause}
Jessi: Note that this question is set as how a female speaker would say it, if you are a male speaker, change the khá to khráp. You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "How tall are you?"
Pim: dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp sen-dtì-méet khâ
Jessi: "I'm 180 cm tall." Listen as it’s repeated slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp sen-dtì-méet khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: dì-chǎn
Jessi: means "I" used by females
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dì-chǎn
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: sǔung
Jessi: meaning "tall."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) sǔung
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: sǔung
{Pause}
Jessi: Next is...
Pim: nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp
Jessi: meaning "180."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp

{Pause}
Jessi: And after that is

Pim: sen-dtì-méet
{Pause}
Jessi: And next…
Pim: khâ
Jessi: which is the particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is a female.
Pim: khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "I'm 180 cm tall." and then repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp sen-dtì-méet khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you would say "I'm 180 cm tall." if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English. Remember to also change the final khá to khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you were a male, and repeat.
Pim: phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp sen-dtì-méet khráp
{Pause}
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "180" with "155."
Pim: nùeng-ráawy hâa-sìp-hâa
Jessi: "155"
Pim: (slow) nùeng-ráawy hâa-sìp-hâa (regular) nùeng-ráawy hâa-sìp-hâa
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "155."
Pim: dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy hâa-sìp-hâa sen-dtì-méet khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, we simply replaced "180." Say, "I'm 155 cm tall."
{pause}
Pim: dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy hâa-sìp-hâa sen-dtì-méet khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn, and also change the final particle. Let’s try it with a masculine version.
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "155" with "160."
Pim: nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp
Jessi: "160"
Pim: (slow) nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp (regular) nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "160."
Pim: phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp sen-dtì-méet khráp
Jessi: Replace the phrase for "155" and make rest of the sentence masculine. Say, "I'm 160 cm tall."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp sen-dtì-méet khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "160" with "168."
Pim: nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp bpàaet
Jessi: "168"
Pim: (slow) nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp bpàaet (regular) nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp bpàaet
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "168."
Pim: phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp bpàaet sen-dtì-méet khráp
Jessi: Replace the word for "168" and make the sentence masculine. Say, "I'm 168 cm tall."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp bpàaet sen-dtì-méet khráp
Jessi: Alright! Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you how tall you are. You’re a female speaker and you are 180 centimeters tall. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy-bpàaet-sìp sen-dtì-méet khâ
Jessi: Now imagine you're a female speaker and that you're 155 centimeters tall. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn sǔung nùeng-ráawy hâa-sìp-hâa sen-dtì-méet khâ
Jessi: Now, imagine you're a male speaker and you’re 160 centimeters tall. Answer the speaker's question.
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá (five seconds) phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp sen-dtì-méet khráp
Jessi: Now, imagine you're a male speaker and you’re 168 centimeters tall. Answer the speaker's question.
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá (five seconds) phǒm sǔung nùeng-ráawy hòk-sìp bpàaet sen-dtì-méet khráp
Jessi: Now you want to ask that person how tall they are. Ask the feminine version of that question.
(5 seconds)
Pim: khun súung thâo-rài khá
{pause}
Jessi: This is the end of Lesson 14.
