INTRODUCTION
Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 11: "How old are you?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How old are you?" In Thai, this is...
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá
Jessi: The first word in the question "How old are you?" is...
Pim: khun
Jessi: Meaning "you" in English. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Pim: khun
Jessi: Listen again at natural speed. Please repeat
Pim: khun
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again once more at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question "How old are you?" is-
Pim: aa-yú
Jessi: meaning "age."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) aa-yú
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: aa-yú
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: khun aa-yú
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: thâo-rài
Jessi: meaning "how much" or "how many"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) thâo-rài
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: thâo-rài
{Pause}
Pim: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài
{pause}
Jessi: And next...
Pim: khá
Jessi: a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá
{pause}
Jessi: Note that this question is set as how a female speaker would say it, if you are a male speaker, change the khá to khráp. You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "How old are you?"
Pim: dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-bpàaet bpii khâ
Jessi: "I'm 18 years old." Listen again as the phrase is repeated slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-bpàaet bpii khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: dì-chǎn
Jessi: means "I" used by female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dì-chǎn
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn
{Pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: aa-yú
Jessi: meaning "year."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) aa-yú
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: aa-yú
{Pause}
Jessi: Next is...
Pim: sìp-bpàaet
Jessi: meaning "eighteen."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) sìp-bpàaet
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: sìp-bpàaet
{Pause}
Jessi: And next.
Pim: khâ
Jessi: particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "I'm 18 years old." and then repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-bpàaet bpii khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you would say "I'm 18 years old." if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English. Remember to also change the final khá to khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you were a male, and repeat.
Pim: phǒm aa-yú sìp-bpàaet bpii khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "eighteen" with "fifteen."
Pim: sìp-hâa
Jessi: "fifteen"
Pim: (slow) sìp-hâa (regular) sìp-hâa
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "fifteen."
Pim: dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-hâa bpii khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "eighteen." Say, "I'm fifteen years old."
{pause}
Pim: dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-hâa bpii khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer you question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn. Remember to also change the final khá to khráp. Now, let’s try it with a masculine version. To use a different phrase, replace "fifteen" with "twenty."
Pim: yîi-sìp
Jessi: "twenty"
Pim: (slow) yîi-sìp (regular) yîi-sìp
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "twenty."
Pim: phǒm aa-yú yîi-sìp bpii khráp
Jessi: Simply replace the word for "fifteen" and make rest of the sentence masculine. Say, "I'm twenty years old."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm aa-yú yîi-sìp bpii khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "twenty" with "thirty-one."
Pim: sǎam-sìp-èt
Jessi: "thirty-one"
Pim: (slow) sǎam-sìp-èt (regular) sǎam-sìp-èt
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "thirty-one."
Pim: phǒm aa-yú sǎam-sìp-èt bpii khráp
Jessi: Replace the word for "twenty" and make rest of the sentence masculine. Say, "I'm thirty-one years old."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm aa-yú sǎam-sìp-èt bpii khráp
Jessi: Ok! Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you how old you are. You’re a female speaker and you are eighteen years old. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-bpàaet bpii khâ
Jessi: Now, imagine you’re a female speaker and you are fifteen years old. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-hâa bpii khâ
Jessi: Now, imagine you're a male speaker and you’re twenty years old. Answer the speaker's question.
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá (five seconds) phǒm aa-yú yîi-sìp bpii khráp
Jessi: Now, imagine you're a male speaker and you’re thirty-one years old. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá (five seconds) phǒm aa-yú sǎam-sìp-èt bpii khráp
Jessi: Now, you want to ask someone how old they are. Ask the feminine version of that question.
(5 seconds)
Pim: khun aa-yú thâo-rài khá
{pause}
Jessi: This is the end of Lesson 11.
