Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 1: "What's your name?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Jessi: meaning "you" in English.

Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-

Jessi: This is how you would say the phrase if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English.

Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace the name "Suchada Jaideejing" with "Manika Ariran."

Jessi: It mostly stay the same. Simply replace the name "Suchada Jaideejing." Say, "My name is Manika Ariran."

Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn. Now let’s try it with a male version.
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace the name "Manika Ariran" with "Somchai Saksri."
Pim: sǒm-chaai sàk-sǐi
Jessi: "Somchai Saksri"
Pim: (slow) sǒm-chaai sàk-sǐi (regular) sǒm-chaai sàk-sǐi
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Somchai Saksri."
Pim: phǒm chûue sǒm-chaai sàk-sǐi khráp
Jessi: it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name "Manika Ariran" with "Somchai Saksri." and use the male version of the sentence. Say, "My name is Somchai Saksri."

Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace the name "Somchai Saksri" with "Nattapon Tawanngam."

Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Nattapon Tawanngam."

Jessi: Here, you replace the name "Somchai Saksri" and use the male version of the sentence. Ssay "My name is Nattapon Tawanngam."

Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting and a female asks you your name. Your name is Suchada Jaideejing. How will you answer?

Jessi: Now imagine your name is Manika Ariran. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun chûue à-rai khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn chûue maa-ní-gaa aa-rii-ran khâ
Jessi: Now imagine your name is Somchai Saksri, which is a male name. Remember to think about the gender of your words and answer the speaker's question.

Jessi: Now imagine your name is Nattapon Tawanngam, which is also a male name. Respond to the question.

Jessi: Now you want to ask that person their name. Ask the feminine version of the question.
