Hello and welcome back to Thai Weekly Words with me, Prathana. This week we’ll be learning about “sports” กีฬา (gii-laa). |
1. ยิมนาสติก (yim-nâat-dtìk) “gymnastics” |
คนเล่นยิมนาสติกต้องมีกล้ามเนื้อแข็งแรงมาก (khon lên yim-nâat-dtìk dtâawng mii glâam núuea khăaeng raaeng mâak) “People who play gymnastics need to have very strong muscles.” |
2. เบสบอล (bèet bon) “baseball” |
คนไทยไม่ค่อยนิยมเล่นเบสบอล (khon thai mâi khâauy ní-yom lên bèet bon) “Thai people don't usually play baseball.” |
Soccer is more popular. It’s very popular in Thailand, but baseball, not so much. |
3. กรีฑา (grii-thaa) “track and field” |
เขาเป็นนักกีฬากรีฑา (khăo bpen nák gii-laa grii-thaa) “He’s a track and field athlete.” |
4. เทนนิส (then-nít) “tennis” |
พรุ่งนี้เราจะไปเล่นเทนนิสกัน (phrûng-níi rao jà bpai lên then-nít gan) “Tomorrow we'll go play tennis.” |
5. แบดมินตัน (bàaet-min-dtân) “badminton” |
แบดมินตันเป็นกีฬาในร่ม (bàaet-min-dtân bpen gii-laa nai rôm) “Badminton is an indoor sport.” |
6. บาสเกตบอล (bâat-gèt-bon) “basketball” |
นักบาสเกตบอลส่วนใหญ่ตัวสูงทั้งนั้น (nák bâat-gèt-bon sùuan yài dtua sǔung tháng nán) “Most basketball players are tall.” |
For your information, we usually say บาส (bâat) as the shortened form of บาสเกตบอล (bâat-gèt-bon), so maybe you wouldn’t hear บาสเกตบอล (bâat-gèt-bon). |
7. ฟุตบอล (fút bon) “football (soccer)” |
คนไทยชอบดูฟุตบอลมาก (khon thai châawp duu fút bon mâak) “Thai people really like watching soccer.” |
8. ศิลปะการต่อสู้แบบผสมผสาน (sĭn-lá-bpà gaan dtàaw sûu bàaep phà-sŏm phà-săan) “mixed martial arts” |
ศิลปะการต่อสู้แบบผสมผสานกำลังได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้น (sĭn-lá-bpà gaan dtàaw sûu bàaep phà-sŏm phà-săan gam-lang dâai ráp kwaam ní-yom mâak khûuen) “Mixed martial arts is getting more popular.” |
