Lesson focus

In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a crucial phrase for all of you travelers out there who are interested in learning more about the tourist attractions you're going to visit. Learning about the history and cultural significance of places you visit can be just as rewarding as seeing them. Today, we'll cover, "Do you have an English information guide?"
In Thai, "Do you have an English information guide?" is mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi.
mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi
Again, don’t forget to be polite when asking a question.
Therefore, women say mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi khá.
mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi khá
And men say mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi khráp.
mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi khráp
The first word, mii means "have," followed by khûu-muue which means "guide book." The next word thâwng-thîiao means "travel" while bpen means "is" or "being." The word phaa-sǎa means "language," followed by ang-grìt which means "English." The word mǎi indicates that this phrase is a question while khá or khráp is added to make this phrase more polite. Therefore, mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi khá and mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-ang-grìt mǎi khráp means "Do you have an English information guide?"
Now, to ask for a different language, we can just replace the word for "English" with any other word for a language and this phrase works just fine. Let's try "Japanese" which in Thai is yîi-bpùn.
yîi-bpùn
Therefore, "Do you have a Japanese information guide?" in Thai is mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-yîi-bpùn mǎi khá
mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-yîi-bpùn mǎi khá
And mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-yîi-bpùn mǎi khráp.
mii khûu-muue thâwng-thîiao bpen phaa-sǎa-yîi-bpùn mǎi khráp
You can use this phrase when you are at a tourist information center located at your destination. You can also use this phrase in a book store when asking for a general travel guide as well.
