Lesson focus

If there is an expression that can be use as a universal greeting, Thai surely has one!
In Thai, we say sà-wàt-dii.
sà-wàt-dii.
Remember, we always want to sound polite in Thai, therefore, to say “hello” for women is sà-wàt-dii khâ.
sà-wàt-dii khâ.
And for men, sà-wàt-dii khráp.
sà-wàt-dii khráp.
Let’s break it down by syllable: sà-wàt-dii khâ. sà-wàt-dii khâ.
sà-wàt-dii khráp. sà-wàt-dii khráp.
The word sà-wàt-dii means "goodness" in Thai. You can use this at any time of the day and to anybody. You may use this as a basic greeting, when you answer the phone, or even when you say goodbye.
Like many other languages, Thai people tend to shorten words and phrases from time to time. Instead of saying sà-wàt-dii khâ or sà-wàt-dii khráp, you may hear Thai people say wàt-dii.
wàt-dii
This shortened phrase tends to be used as an informal form of greeting. But it is very common for Thai people to say this as well.

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so chôok-dii khâ, that means "good luck" in Thai.
Remember, khâ is for women and khráp is for men.
Ok, here we go!
Universal formal of greeting in Thai, for women - sà-wàt-dii khâ.
sà-wàt-dii khâ.
sà-wàt-dii khâ.
Universal formal of greeting in Thai, for men - sà-wàt-dii khráp.
sà-wàt-dii khráp.
sà-wàt-dii khráp.
The informal formal of greeting in Thai, for women - wàt-dii khâ.
wàt-dii khâ.
wàt-dii khâ.
The informal formal of greeting in Thai, for men - wàt-dii khráp.
wàt-dii khráp.
wàt-dii khráp.
All right. That’s is going to do it for today. Remember to stop by ThaiPod101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.

My name is Johnny.. On several occasions, having put a (fairly easy) password in, your programme has asked me to "re-enter" AND I cannot get beyond the "Greetings".

I go to BKK on February 8th, and would LOVE some Thai lessons!

Being an older person, I ain't (sic) used to computers either.

Your stuff SEEMS easy and good to do. Sorry but I cannot manage your set-up!

your email says - click here to access the lesson for free - but all I get is the lesson blurred out by upgrade prompts - how do I remove these prompts to access the lesson?

Hello Nicole,

Thank you very much for your comment. For your question, as a visitor I would like to suggest you to use a proper Thai which is "sà-wàt-dii kâ or kráp" because "wàt-dii" is use with someone you already know. Hope that help. Enjoy your next trip.

Have a great day.

Hello from Australia.

Last time we visited Thailand I used sawatdii-ka to greet everyone we met. After watching many travel videos on youtube in preparation for returning for another Thai holiday I have noticed many casual greetings of watdii, ie at markets. I am wondering if it is suitable for me as a tourist to use this simplified greeting or if it is more for Thai locals to use? Would I say watdii or watdii-ka? Or best to stick to sawatdii-ka?

Thankyou.
