Hi, everybody! |
Do you know how to say “Bye” in Thai? In this lesson, you'll learn three parting expressions in Thai. |
Let’s start with the easiest one. |
สวัสดี |
[slowly] สวัสดี |
This means "Goodbye" in Thai. |
In Thai, the word for "hello" and "goodbye" is the same word. For women, you would say, sà-wàt-dii khâ, and for men, you would say, sà-wàt-dii khráp.Note that this is a formal expression. |
If you want to be more formal as a female speaker, there is a different phrase you should use. |
ไปก่อนนะคะ สวัสดีค่ะ |
[slowly] ไปก่อนนะคะ สวัสดีค่ะ |
This means "I'm going now. Goodbye" in Thai. Only female speakers can use it. |
There is another phrase you can use in conjunction with sà-wàt-dii, in order to say "goodbye." Since it ends with khâ, only female speakers can use it. It is similar to saying "I'm going now, goodbye," in English. |
If you want to be more formal as a male speaker, here's a phrase for you. |
ไปก่อนนะครับ สวัสดีครับ |
[slowly] ไปก่อนนะครับ สวัสดีครับ |
This means "I'm going now. Goodbye" in Thai. Only male speakers can use it. |
As a male speaker, you can add khráp at the end to make the phrase more polite. This phrase literally means "I'm leaving before you leave, so goodbye." |
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me. |
"Goodbye." |
สวัสดี |
* beep |
สวัสดี |
"I'm going now. Goodbye." for female speakers. |
ไปก่อนนะคะ สวัสดีค่ะ |
* beep |
ไปก่อนนะคะ สวัสดีค่ะ |
"I'm going now. Goodbye." for male speakers. |
ไปก่อนนะครับ สวัสดีครับ |
* beep |
ไปก่อนนะครับ สวัสดีครับ |
Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact! |
In Thai, there is another phrase meaning "goodbye"; laa gàawn. However, most people don't use this word anymore because it represents sadness due to a departure where two people might not see each other again. This is why Thai people use the English phrase "bye-bye," because it represents a more cheerful and hopeful message. |
