Peter: Now, Becky, here are the top 3 language learning fears according to our users. What do we have first on the list? |
Becky: Ooh, the first one is a good one. It’s “I’m not good enough to start speaking yet.” |
Peter: Listeners, do you feel like you’re not good enough to start speaking yet? |
Becky: It’s a pretty common fear... or misconception, I think... that most learners have. |
Peter: Well, here’s how you overcome it. |
Becky: One - the best way to get good at speaking is to start speaking from day 1. So if you’re holding yourself back... |
Peter: ...because you think you’re not good enough, well, that’s exactly why you’re not good enough. |
Becky: You need to open your mouth and start talking! |
Peter: Step two to overcoming this fear - In our lessons, you get the exact phrases and scripts for introducing yourself... |
Becky: ...making small talk, ordering food, expressing opinions, and much more! |
Peter: So, if you think you’re not good enough, the lessons will give you the exact lines to say. |
Becky: Fear number two is... “I’m afraid I’ll never be fluent” |
Peter: I used to worry about that. |
Becky: Really? |
Peter: Well, only as a beginner. I started learning Japanese first and, it’s funny because the better my Japanese got, the less I was worried about that. |
Becky: So, how can our listeners overcome this? |
Peter: First, you’ve got to set small, specific goals. Fluency is a big vague goal. |
Becky: Right. |
Peter: Arguably, we don’t even speak fluent English. There are over a million words in the English language and we use about 2,000 words. |
Becky: So listeners, you should focus on smaller goals... |
Peter: ...like being able to introduce yourself or having a 5-minute conversation. Or 10 minutes. Something you can measure so you know you reached it. |
Becky: Because you can’t really measure fluency... it’s a pretty vague goal as Peter said. |
Peter: Right. But you can measure small goals like... having a 5-minute conversation. |
Becky: And as these small goals add up, you’ll be speaking very comfortably! |
Peter: Becky, what’s the third and final fear? |
Becky: It’s “I’m afraid that I’m not making any progress.” |
Peter: Ah, in other words, getting stuck. |
Becky: If you’re afraid you’re not making progress, there are two things you can do right now. |
Peter: First, use the dashboard to track your progress. If you need numbers to believe it... |
Becky: ...our dashboard tracks all the lessons you’ve completed and shows how much you’ve accomplished. |
Peter: Second, try a harder lesson on the site. It sounds crazy and you might not understand it... |
Becky: ...but you will in minutes. Our lessons come with line-by-line translations... |
Peter: ...and the lesson hosts explain everything. THEN, you’ll be making progress... |
Becky: ...because you now understand something you didn’t minutes ago. |
Peter: So, these are the top 3 fears. But tell us listeners... what language learning fears have you had? |
Becky: Leave us a comment in the comment section! |
Peter: And if you want to finally master your language... remember... |
Becky: Our Halloween Monster-Sized Sale starts now! |

HideWhat Thai learning fears have you had? Are you afraid you’re not good enough to speak? Are you freezing up? Let us know!
Hi Deryck,
I think it sounds very good to way to study. There's no answer to study a language - if it works with you, that's the best way to study Thai for you : )
Actually, we'd like to ask you to use the review and dialogue track more often if you'd like to check lessons from different series- Listen to the lesson first, and listen to the dialogue and review track over the weekend. That will help you remind what you just learned, and help you develop your listening skills and vocab much better-
Thank you,
Jae

Hi, My fear is that I'm wasting too much time and not learning efficiently. I study Thai in one form or another every day and I know I'm learning, but after listening to your Sunday News #95 and setting a 1 year goal, I'm seeing the months disappear and am all over the place with lessons. Sounds silly I know, but I actually think you have too many choices of learning tools. I'm happy they are there, just don't know in what order or time management capacity to use them properly.
