INTRODUCTION |
John: Expressions Using Food Words |
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John. |
Jay: And I'm Jay! |
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 16. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions related to food. |
John: Thai people love food, and there are several words that use food as a way to describe things. |
SLANG EXPRESSIONS |
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are: |
Jay: เผือก (phùueak) |
Jay: มาม่า (maa-mâa) |
Jay: ลำไย (lam-yai) |
Jay: บ๊วย (búuai) |
John: Jay, what's our first expression? |
Jay: เผือก (phùueak) |
John: The meaning originally comes from a rude slang word... |
Jay: เสือก(sùueak), |
John: ...which sounds similar, and it means “being nosy.” When the sound of the word is changed, the meaning is not as rude and it also happens to mean the same thing as the English word “taro” (a vegetable). When it's used as a slang expression, it means "being nosy or overly curious." |
Jay: [SLOW] เผือก [NORMAL] เผือก |
John: Listeners, please repeat. |
Jay: เผือก |
[pause - 5 sec.] |
John: Use this expression to refer to someone who is getting into someone's business. Be careful with your tone. Even though the word's rudeness is being softened, the meaning can hurt others if you say it the wrong way. |
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence. |
Jay: [NORMAL] อย่าเผือกเรื่องชาวบ้านได้ไหม [SLOW] อย่าเผือกเรื่องชาวบ้านได้ไหม |
John: "Could you not be nosy about other people's business?" |
Jay: [NORMAL] อย่าเผือกเรื่องชาวบ้านได้ไหม |
John: Okay, what's the next expression? |
Jay: มาม่า (maa-mâa) |
John: This word comes from the name of an instant noodle brand, but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "instant noodles." |
Jay: [SLOW] มาม่า [NORMAL] มาม่า |
John: Listeners, please repeat. |
Jay: มาม่า |
[pause - 5 sec.] |
John: Use this expression to describe instant noodles in general. |
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence. |
Jay: [NORMAL] อยากกินมาม่าจัง [SLOW] อยากกินมาม่าจัง |
John: "I want to eat instant noodles." |
Jay: [NORMAL] อยากกินมาม่าจัง |
John: Okay, what's our next expression? |
Jay: ลำไย (lam-yai) |
John: This literally means "longang (a tropical fruit)," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "getting irritated." |
Jay: [SLOW] ลำไย [NORMAL] ลำไย |
John: Listeners, please repeat. |
Jay: ลำไย |
[pause - 5 sec.] |
John: This slang expression is used when young people, mostly gay people and ladyboys, get very irritated by someone. |
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence. |
Jay: [NORMAL] ลำไยป้าคนนั้นมากๆ พูดมากชะมัด [SLOW] ลำไยป้าคนนั้นมากๆ พูดมากชะมัด |
John: "I am irritated by that old woman; she blabbers too much." |
Jay: [NORMAL] ลำไยป้าคนนั้นมากๆ พูดมากชะมัด |
John: Okay, what's the last expression? |

John: This literally means "Chinese plum," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be the last, or to be the worst." |
Jay: [SLOW] บ๊วย [NORMAL] บ๊วย |
John: Listeners, please repeat. |
Jay: บ๊วย |
