Welcome back to Thai Holiday Words with me, Jay. Today we are going to do New Year's Day. So fun, huh? Ok, let's begin. |
1. วันขึ้นปีใหม่ (wan khûen bpii mài) "New Year's Day" |
"New Year's Day is actually on the first of January, every year." |
In the past, Thailand’s New Year's Day is not on the first of January, do you know when is it? Tick-tick-tick… it’s on the first of April. Yeah, I don't know why too, but it was on the first, it was the first of April but I think it’s kind of crash with Songkran day, so they moved it to, to be more international, which is on the first of January. |
2. วันสิ้นปี (wan sîn bpii) "New Year's Eve" |
"New Year's Eve in Thailand is actually a public holiday." |
Normally during new year’s eve I prefer to stay home, because in Bangkok and in big cities in Thailand, it’s very crowded, I’m telling you this is very crowded, people are going out with family and friends, and you know, traffic jam and everything, it’s very bad, but it's very fun though. |
3. การนับถอยหลัง (gaan náp thǎauy lăng) "countdown" |
Actually you can use the English word, like, countdown. I feel personally that it sounds more natural to use the word "countdown" rather than การนับถอยหลัง(gaan náp thǎauy lăng) is more of a Thai explanation to the word. |
"The place that people love to go for the countdown is 'Central World'." |
4. ทำบุญ (tham bun) "do good things for Karma" |
"The most popular activity on New Year's Day is to do good things for Karma." |
Thai people they love to go to temples, and present food to monks. But however, there are many things that you can do to make good merit, like, you know, like help elderly, help your parents, that's considered good karma as well, so anything at all. |
5. เพลงพรปีใหม่ (phleeng phaawn bpii mài) "New Year's Greeting Song" |
one, two, three… (singing) |
Ok, enough. It’s composed by our King Rama 9 as well, so that's why it's very popular, and if you happen to be in Thailand during the new year, you will definitely hear this song play. |
"Thai people usually play the new year's greeting song on New Year's Day." |
