POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, Pantip Plaza is a big IT mall isn’t that right? |
Pim: Yes, it is. You can get all sorts of electronic goods there. Computers, phones, cameras...they have it all. Do you know the rock band Loso? |
Ben: Yeah, sure. They're pretty cool. |
Pim: They have one song called "Pantip". |
Ben: Do they sing about all the great things you can buy there? |
Pim: No. Actually, the lyrics are about how he'd like to take his girlfriend to different places for shopping in Bangkok such as Central, Emporium, MBK, and Siam Square. But there's no way he's taking her to Pantip Plaza? |
Ben: Oh? Why is that? What does he have against Pantip Plaza? You just said there are a lot of electronics there. The shopping isn't good enough for him? |
Pim: No, the shops are all fine. Except for one. |
Ben: Which one is that? |
Pim: The one his ex-girlfriend opened! That's why he won't take his new girl to Pantip. He wants to avoid a cat fight. |
Ben: Sounds like an interesting song. |
Pim: Well, if you want to learn the words, you can just look up the song on ethaimusic.com. |
Ben: Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out. Now let's take a look at the vocabulary. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Ben: Let's take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Pim: น้อง (náawng) |
Ben: This is a noun that means “younger sibling”. You may remember from the last lesson we discussed the use of พี่ (phîi). Well this is just the opposite. |
Pim: Right. น้อง (náawng) can be used as a pronoun to refer to the younger person. If the speaker is younger, he can call themself น้อง náawng. And if the speaker is older, he can call the other person น้อง (náawng.) |
Ben: And the next phrase is... |
Pim: ว่าจะ (wâa jà) |
Ben: This expression is used to begin a new sentence that explains why something else was previously said. It’s almost like saying “Well, it’s because...” |
Pim: Yes. That’s right. In the conversation, Suchada first asked her brother if he had any plans. Then after hearing his reply, she began her next line with ว่าจะ wâa jà to start her explanation of why she was really asking. |
Ben: And finally, we have the phrase... |
Pim: ไม่น่า (mâi nâa) |
Ben: This expression is used to mean “shouldn’t have”. |
Pim: น่า nâa can mean “should” or “ought to”. So ไม่น่า mâi nâa means “shouldn’t have”, or “ought not to have”. |
Ben: How was it used in the conversation? |
Pim: Sin said... ไม่น่ารับปากเพื่อนก่อนเลย |
(mâi nâa ráp bpàak phûuean gàawn looei.) |
Ben: “I shouldn’t have made a promise to my friend before.” He sounds disappointed. His sister’s friend must be pretty cute. |
Pim: I guess so! |
Ben: OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section. |
Lesson focus
|
Ben: The focus of this lesson is using ไป (bpai) with other verbs to show the direction of action away from the speaker. |
Pim: If you remember from the previous lesson, some verbs in Thai can follow other verbs to show the direction of an action. So in this lesson we’ll look at the verb ไป (bpai), which means “to go”. |
Ben: Naturally “going” implies that the direction is moving away from the speaker. |
Pim: That’s right. We know that กลับ (glàp) is the verb “to return”. So then กลับไป (glàp bpai ) would mean “to return” to someplace. It could be any place really, just not the place where the speaker is located. |
Ben: So how would that get used in a sentence? |
Pim: It’s used just like any other verb. For example, I could say...คุณจอห์นกลับไปอเมริกาแล้ว (khun jaawn glàp bpai à-mee-rí-gaa láaeo.) |
Ben: “John went back to America already.” |
Ben: How about another example? |
Pim: OK. ลง (long) is the verb “to descend”. Then, ลงไป (long bpai) means “to descend” away from the speaker. For example, ผู้จัดการ (phûu-jàt-gaan) is “manager”, and ชั้นหนึ่ง (chán nùeng) is “first floor”. With these words I can say... |
ผู้จัดการลงไปชั้นหนึ่งค่ะ (phûu-jàt-gaan long bpai chán nùeng khâ.) |
Ben: “The manager went down to the first floor.” Now what happens if ไป bpai comes in front of another verb instead of behind it? |
Pim: In that case it becomes a series of actions. It’s like saying “Go and...do something” for example, ไปส่งเพื่อน (bpai sòng phûuean) means “Go and take my friend”. Or ไปดูหนัง (bpai duu nǎng) means “Go and watch a movie”. |
Ben: I got it. So basically, ไป (bpai) before a verb means “Go and do something”, but ไป (bpai) after a verb means “Do something headed away from me.” |
Pim: That’s it! |
Ben: OK, now it’s review time. Listeners, please repeat each sentence after Khru Pim, and see if you remember the meaning of each one. First is... |
Pim: ผู้จัดการลงไปชั้นหนึ่งค่ะ (phûu-jàt-gaan long bpai chán nùeng khâ.) |
Ben: (pause) “The manager went down to the first floor.” Did you get it right? Next is... |
Pim: ไปส่งเพื่อน (bpai sòng phûuean) |
Ben: (pause) “Go and take a friend.” OK, the next sentence... |
Pim: ไปดูหนัง (bpai duu nǎng) |
Ben: (pause) “Go and watch a movie”. Finally, we have... |
Pim: คุณจอห์นกลับไปอเมริกาแล้ว (khun jaawn glàp bpai à-mee-rí-gaa láaeo.) |
Ben: (pause) “John went back to America already.” |
Pim: How did you do? Were you able to get every sentence? |
Outro
|
Ben: And that’s it for this lesson. Thank you for listening! See you again! |
Pim: แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (Læ̂w phb kạn h̄ım̀ kh̀a) |
