| Ben: Hey Khru Pim, you’re married, right? |
| Pim: That’s right. |
| Ben: So instead of Khru Pim, I could can you Naang Pim. That’s the Thai word for Mrs., right? |
| Pim: Actually I still go by Naang-sǎao. |
| Ben: You still go by “Miss”? Doesn’t that give people the wrong impression? |
| Pim: Not at all. It gives the correct impression that I’m not too old yet. |
| Ben: Let me guess, you’ve been 29 for the past three years. |
| Pim: You’re close! Anyways I still have to use “Miss” because I haven’t changed it on my ID card yet. You know, it wasn’t very long ago that Thai women won the right to keep Naang-sǎao on their IDs. It helps younger married women against discrimination in the job market. A lot of times it’s easier to get hired if you still go by “Miss”. |
| Ben: That sounds like a bit of a hassle. Guys definitely have some things easier in life. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Ben: Let's take a closer look at the words and phrases from this lesson. First we have... |
| Pim: รับสาย (Rạb s̄āy) |
| Ben: This means “to answer the telephone”. |
| Pim: Right. รับ (ráp) is the verb “to receive”, and สาย sǎai is a noun that can mean “cord” or “line”. |
| Ben: So you can use this when answering the phone after stating your name, right? |
| Pim: Yes. For example, I could say นางสาวพิมรับสายค่ะ (naang-sǎao phim ráp-sǎai khâ) |
| Ben: “This is Miss Pim speaking.” What’s the next phrase? |
| Pim: ครับผม (khráp-phǒm) |
| Ben: This is a very polite phrase that is used like “Yes, sir” or “Yes, ma’am”. |
| Pim: Exactly. It always sounds nice when somebody uses ครับผม (khráp-phǒm), so be sure you learn this one. |
| Ben: And how do you work it into a sentence? |
| Pim: Well, If you want to reply to someone’s request to let them know that you understood the message, then you can simply say ครับผม khráp-phǒm. If you have anything else to add, that can come after. Do you understand? |

| Pim: Oh, you learn quickly! |
| Ben: Thanks. Now what’s our last phrase? |
| Pim: ว่ามาเลย (wâa maa looei) |
| Ben: This was used in the conversation to say “Go ahead and speak”. |
| Pim: That’s right. ว่า (wâa) is “to say” and มา (maa) is the verb “to come”. |
| Ben: So is that kind of like “say it towards me”? |
| Pim: That’s the basic idea. มา (maa) just shows the direct of the action coming towards the speaker. |
| Ben: OK, I think I got it. Now let’s move on to the grammar section. |

| Ben: The focus of this lesson is using titles such as Mr., Miss, and Mrs. in Thai. We talked about these a little bit before, but can you explain more how they work? |
| Pim: No problem. นาย naai means “Mr.”, นางสาว (น.ส.) (naang-sǎao) means “Miss”, and นาง (naang) means “Mrs.” And just as in English we use them in front of a person’s name. But most often it is with both their first and last names included. |
| Ben: Can you give us an exacple using a real person? |
| Pim: Sure. How about this sentence... |

| Pim: Well, first was just her name, น.ส. ยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร (naang-sǎao yîng-lák chin-ná-wát) |
| Ben: “Miss Yingluck Shinawatra...” |
| Pim: เป็นผู้หญิงคนแรก (bpen phûu-yǐng khon râaek) |
| Ben: “...is the first woman...” |
| Pim: ที่ได้รับเลือก (thîi dâai ráp lûueak) |
| Ben: “...that got elected...” |
| Pim: เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีของประเทศไทย (bpen naa-yók-rát-thá-mon-dtrii khǎawng bprà-thêet-thai.) |
| Ben: “...to be the Prime Minister of Thailand”. And let’s have the whole thing together. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim. |

| Ben: So these three titles are used by adults. Now what about children? |
| Pim: For children, we use ด.ช (dèk-chaai) for “boy” and ด.ญ (dèk-yǐng) for “girl”. |
| Ben: Do they go in front of a child’s name like “Mr.” or “Miss”? |
| Pim: Yes, they do. For example, if there was a girl whose name was ธนัชชา สุขสวัสดิ์ (thá-nát-chaa sùk-sà-wàt), she would be known as ด.ญ. ธนัชชา สุขสวัสดิ์ (dèk-yǐng thá-nát-chaa sùk-sà-wàt.) |

| Pim: However, we can also use these terms in a more general sense like in the example from our conversation...อีกสองคนเป็นเด็กชายกับเด็กหญิง |
