| Pim: Well, they remain an important source of information. And older people will definitely read them even if younger people are getting more and more of their news from TV and the internet. |
| Ben: Sounds a lot like in the US. So, what are the most popular newspapers in Thailand? |
| Pim: They’re Thairath, Matichon, and of course the Daily News. But this Daily News is different than the place where Suchada works. |
| Ben: So, what is that in Thai? |

| Ben: That makes sense. |

| Pim: ยินดีรับใช้ (yin-dii ráp-chái) |
| Man: This is a phrase used on the phone, which is equivalent to “May I help you?” or “At your service.” |
| Pim: That’s right. ยินดี (yin-dii) is an adjective meaning “pleased” or “delighted”. And รับใช้ (ráp-chái) is a verb that means “to serve”. So if you put them together you have “pleased to serve.” |
| Man: So, a person answering the phone will use this phrase after stating their name or the place they work. What’s the next phrase? |
| Pim: เกี่ยวกับ (gìiao-gàp) |
| Man: This is a preposition meaning “about” or “regarding”. It’s used just as “regarding” would be in English. It comes coming directly in front of the noun that you’re talking about. What was the example from the conversation? |

| Pim: รอสักครู่ (raaw sàk-khrûu) |
| Man: This means “Wait a moment.” |
| Pim: Exactly. รอ (raaw) is the verb “to wait”. And สักครู่ (sàk-khrûu) is an adverb meaning “for a moment”. |
| Man: I’ve heard this used a lot in Thailand. |
| Pim: Oh, yes. Service personnel will always say รอสักครู่ (raaw sàk-khrûu) to customers when they need them to wait. |
| Man: And finally, we have a new word to look at... |
| Pim: เจ้าหน้าที่ (jâo-nâa-thîi) |
| Man: This is a noun that means “officer” or “official”. |
| Pim: Yes. It’s a compound made up of เจ้า (jâo), meaning “lord” or “master” and หน้าที่ (H̄n̂āthī̀) meaning “assignment” or “duty”. |
| Man: I see. So you can think of it as an officer is a sort of “master of his assignment”. Now let’s move on to the grammar section. |

| Pim: OK. Maybe you are talking to hotel staff, and they say |

| Pim: เพื่อ (phûuea) is used when you want to say “for the purpose of” or “for the sake of”. For example, I could say... |
