| Ben: Hey Khru Pim, flooding is a serious problem in Thailand isn’t it? |
| Pim: You got that right! I think the floods in 2011 were the worst that it’s ever been. It even affected people all over the world. |
| Ben: Oh, how is that. I know some people had to reschedule their vacations. Is that what you mean? |
| Pim: No. I’m talking about all the factories in the central plains that got flooded and had to shut down. They are major suppliers of parts for automobiles, computers, and other electronics. The Japanese companies Toyota and Honda were hit pretty bad. I also heard that production of the iPad was slowed down because some of the parts are made in Thailand. |
| Ben: Wow, I didn’t think about it like that. It’s crazy how interconnected the world is these days. |
| Pim: And if you think about it, every country in the world is partially responsible for global climate change. I just hope the floods don’t get any worse in the future. |

| Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Pim: The first Phrase is มีถนนขาดหลายสาย (mii thà-nǒn khàat lǎai sǎai) |
| Ben: This phrase means “There are many roads cut off”. |
| Pim: That’s right. ถนนขาด (thà-nǒn khàat) is a “road that is cut off.” And สาย (sǎai) is the classifier used for roads, so หลายสาย (lǎai sǎai) means “many roads.” |
| Ben: So going by the word order, it’s a little like saying “There are roads cut off, many of them.” |
| Pim: Exactly. |
| Ben: Ok then, what’s the next phrase? |
| Pim: แย่จริง (yâae jing) |
| Ben: This means “really bad”. |
| Pim: แย่ (yâae) is an adjective that means “bad” or “lousy”. And จริง (jing) is another adjective that means “real” or “true”. |
| Ben: So you can just use this as a reaction to some bad news that you hear. For example, if you found out there was a big pileup on the highway, you can say... |

| Ben: “That’s really terrible!” OK, now what is the last phrase? |
| Pim: เต็มที่ (dtem-thîi) |
| Ben: This is an adverb that can mean “so”, “extremely”, or “to the utmost”. How can we use it? |
| Pim: Well, in the conversation, we had อย่างเต็มที่ (yàang dtem-thîi) at the end of a sentence. If you remember from lesson 18, อย่าง yàang can mean “in the manner of”. So อย่างเต็มที่ (yàang dtem-thîi) after a verb means the action was done “in a Manner of going all out” or “to the utmost way.” |

| Ben: The focus of this lesson is using ขาด khàat to talk about things that are “cut off”. |
| Pim: ขาด khàat is a very useful word that can act as either a verb or an adjective. Some of it’s possible meanings are “broken”, “severed”, “missing”, “to lack”, and “to be torn”. It is used in many expressions that convey these ideas. |
| Ben: What was the first example we had from the conversation? |
| Pim: หน่วยข่าวของเราที่นั่นขาดการติดต่อไป |

| Ben: “Our news unit there is out of contact.” Now in this sentence, ขาด khàat is acting as a verb, right? |
| Pim: Yes, that’s right. The subject of the sentence is หน่วยข่าวของเรา (nùuai khàao khǎawng rao), or “Our news unit”. Then the verb is ขาด (khàat), and the object is การติดต่อ (gaan-dtìt-dtàaw), which means “communication” or “connection”. |
| Ben: Alright Khru Pim, you said ขาด (khàat) can be an adjective too. Did we have any examples of that? |
| Pim: Yes, we had the sentence from before...มีถนนขาดหลายสายเลย |

| Ben: “There are many roads closed off.” So here the subject is ถนน (thà-nǒn), meaning “road”. |
| Pim: Yes. And ขาด (khàat) works as an adjective to describe the roads. |
| So ถนนขาด (thà-nǒn khàat) means a “broken road” or a “road that is cut off”. |
| Ben: OK, that seems simple enough. |
| Pim: You know, there are a lot of expressions, too that contain ขาด khàat, such as... ขาดแคลน (khàat-khlaaen) |
| Ben: “to lack” or “to be deficient”. That word was in the conversation. Are there any more you can think of that we didn’t see? |
| Pim: How about ขาดกัน (khàat-gan) |
| Ben: “to break up”, as in relationship. |
| Pim: Or there is also ขาดงาน (khàat-ngaan) |
| Ben: “to be absent from work” |
