| Ben: Exactly. You know back home I’m always reaching for the remote as soon as the commercials come on, but I never find myself doing that in Thailand. The commercials are so good I just watch them straight through. |

| Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is... |

| Ben: This phrase means “a little bit exceeding the actual”. |
| Pim: That’s right. เกิน (gooen) is the verb “to exceed”, and จริง (jing) is an adjective meaning “true” or “actual”. Then ไปหน่อย (bpai nàuy) means of “a little bit too much”. |
| Ben: What was the whole sentence that this phrase appeared in? |
| Pim: หลาย ๆ อย่างก็โฆษณาเกินจริงไปหน่อย |

| Ben: “Many things are over advertised.” Or another way to understand it would be “Many products are advertised beyond their real value.” What is the next phrase? |
| Pim: จะได้รับผลตอบแทน (jà dâai ráp phǒn dtàawp-thaaen) |
| Ben: This means something like “You will reap the benefits of your good work.” |
| Pim: That’s one way to put it. ตอบแทน (dtàawp-thaaen) is a verb that means “to repay” or “to compensate”. Then ผล phǒn, in this case, means “result”. |
| Ben: I see. So ผลตอบแทน (phǒn dtàawp-thaaen) means “the result is repaid”. |
| Pim: Yeah, something like that. And don’t forget the first part, จะได้รับ (jà dâai ráp), which means “will receive”. So the whole phrase จะได้รับผลตอบแทน (jà dâai ráp phǒn dtàawp-thaaen) is like saying “will receive the result being repaid”. |
| Ben: OK, and what is the final phrase we have? |
| Pim: เปลี่ยนใจ (bplìian-jai) |
| Ben: This means “to change one’s mind”. |
| Pim: Yes, that’s correct. เปลี่ยน (bplìian) is the verb “to change”. And ใจ (jai) can mean “heart” or “mind”. |
| Ben: In that case, you could also say it means “a change of heart”. |
| Pim: You could. เปลี่ยนใจ (bplìian-jai) can mean “to have a change of heart” or “to change your mind”. |
| Ben: Alright. Now how about we move on to the grammar section. |

| Pim: In the previous lesson, we learned that อย่าง yàang can form adverbs to describe a “manner” or “way” of doing some action. Another important use of the word อย่าง yàang is to talk about a “type” or “kind” of thing. |
| Ben: And how do we do that? |
| Pim: Let’s take an example from the conversation. Suchada said... |
| สินค้าทางทีวีบางอย่างก็ดีจริง |
| (sǐn-kháa thaang thii-wii baang yàang gâaw dii jing.) |
| Ben: “Some products on the TV are actually good.” The key part of this sentence is the phrase บางอย่าง (baang yàang), which means “some things”. |
| Pim: That’s right. บางอย่าง (baang yàang) could be understood either as “some kinds” or “some things”. So it is a little like saying “Of the products on TV, some kinds are good”. |
| Ben: Can we hear the whole sentence once again? This time, listeners, try repeating after Khru Pim. |

| Ben: (pause) We also had an example of อย่าง (yàang) in the sentence that followed didn’t we? |

| Ben: “But many are over advertised.” |
| Pim: So here, หลาย ๆ อย่าง (lǎai-lǎai yàang) means “many things” or “many types”. |
| Ben: So far we’ve had “some things” and “many things”. How about “everything”? |
| Pim: Good thing you asked because that was in the conversation, too. The laundry lady said... |

| Pim: The key phrase here is ทุกอย่าง (thúk yàang). That means “everything”. |
| Ben: OK, so now we’ve got “some things”, “many things”, and “everything”. Is there anything else we should know about using อย่าง (yàang)? |
| Pim: There’s one more very important use. อย่าง yàang can be a classifier when you are talking about the amount of “types” or “things”. Do you remember back from lesson one what ข้าวราดแกง (khâao râat gaaeng) is? |
| Ben: Hmm...That would be “rice topped with curry”, right? |
| Pim: That’s right! If you remember we said the price is a little different depending on whether you get two types of curry or just one. So if you asked me about the price, I could say... |

| Ben: “Rice topped with a single type of curry is thirty baht. With two types it’s thirty-five baht.” And what are the two key phrases in there? |
| Pim: อย่างเดียว (yàang diiao) means “a single type”, and สองอย่าง (sǎawng yàang) means “two types”. |
