| Ben: Hey Khru Pim, the girls said they wanted to go to Yaowarat Road. That’s basically right in the middle of Chinatown isn’t it? |
| Pim: That’s right. And do you know why Yaowrat Road is a good place to have a business? |
| Ben: Umm...because it’s a really busy street with a lot of foot traffic from all the other shops? |
| Pim: Well, that’s true. But on top of that, the shape of Yaowarat Road resembles the curvy body of a Chinese dragon. |
| Ben: Oh yeah? Is that why the Chinese picked that spot to settle down in? |
| Pim: Actually the original Chinatown was where the Grand Palace now sits. When King Rama I decided to shift the capital across to the East side of the Chao Phraya River the Chinese settlers had to move to a new location, and Yaowarat is where they ended up. |

| Pim: เย็นแล้ว (yen láaeo) |
| Ben: This phrase means “It’s evening already.” |
| Pim: That’s right. Maybe you thought it meant “it’s cold already” because เย็น (yen) is usually an adjective meaning “cool”. However, in this case เย็น (yen) is short for ตอนเย็น (dtaawn-yen), meaning “evening”. |
| Ben: Got it. Next we have a word to discuss... |
| Pim: เถอะ thòe |
| Ben: This is a particle put at the end of a sentence to indicate a command or to urge your listener to do some action. What example did we have in the conversation? |
| Pim: Fon said ไปหาอะไรกินกันเถอะ (bpai hǎa à-rai gin gan thòe.) |
| Ben: “Let’s go find something to eat.” |
| Pim: That’s right. ไปหาอะไรกินกัน (bpai hǎa à-rai gin gan) means “Go look for something to eat together.” Then adding เถอะ thòe to the end is like saying “Do it!” |
| Ben: I see. So when using เถอะ thòe, the speaker is not really asking for the listener’s opinion. |
| Pim: No. It’s more like they are telling them what needs to be done. |
| Ben: Alright, and what is the last phrase? |
| Pim: ทุกเจ้า (thúk jâo) |
| Ben: This expression means “every shop”, is that correct? |
| Pim: Yes. Usually เจ้า jâo is a noun meaning “lord” or “master”. But in this case it’s used in reference to the term เจ้าของร้าน (jâo-khǎawng-ráan) meaning “shopkeeper”. |
| Ben: I see. So Suchada didn’t mean that every lord had great dumplings. |
| Pim: No, just every shop. |
| Ben: OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section. |

| Ben: The focus of this lesson is using โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง (dooi-chà-pháw-yàang-yîng) to say “especially”. |
| Pim: โดยเฉพาะ (dooi-chà-pháw) and โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง (dooi-chà-pháw-yàang-yîng) are both used to mean “especially” or “in particular”. |
| Ben: What’s the difference between the two? |
| Pim: Well, อย่างยิ่ง (yàang-yîng), by itself means “extremely” or “considerably”, so โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง (dooi-chà-pháw-yàang-yîng) is slightly more forceful than just โดยเฉพาะ (dooi-chà-pháw). But other than that, there is no difference. |
| Ben: These phrases will usually go in the middle of a sentence, and are followed by the object that you want to distinguish or set apart. Let’s look at an example from the conversation. |
| Pim: OK. We had this sentence...ราคาก็ไม่แพงมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งขนมจีบที่นั่น |

| Ben: “And it’s not very expensive, especially the steamed dumplings there.” How about we break this sentence up into two halves to get some speaking practice. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim. “And it’s not very expensive...” |

| Ben: (pause) “...especially the steamed dumplings there.” |
