INTRODUCTION |
Ohm: สวัสดีครับ |
Ja: Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 10: “How Many Pairs of Sunglasses Do You Need in Thailand?” I'm Ja. |
Ohm: And I'm Ohm. What are we going to learn in this lesson? |
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express needs. |
Ohm: This conversation takes place at Pratunam Market in Bangkok. |
Ja: It’s between Dao and a seller in the market. |
Ohm: The speakers are strangers, so they'll be using formal Thai. |
Ja: Alright, let's listen to the conversation. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Ja: I’ve heard that Pratunam Market is THE place to go if you want to find clothing at wholesale prices. |
Ohm: Yes, it's a big market in the middle of Bangkok with thousands of shops. Most of them sell clothing, shoes, accessories, and things like that. |
Ja: And the prices are good? |
Ohm: Of course! You might want to practice your bargaining skills, but in general this is the place where Thai people go when they want to buy fashion in bulk to sell at their own shops. |
Ja: I see. I'll definitely have to check it out when I have a chance. And now let’s look at the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Ja: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the key words and phrases from this lesson. The first one is… |
Ohm: ขายส่ง |
Ja: This word can be used as either a verb or an adjective and means "wholesale." It's a compound word with two parts. |
Ohm: That's right. The first part, ขาย (khǎai), is the verb "to sell," and the second part, ส่ง (sòng), is the verb "to send." You use it most often as an adjective, as in the phrase ร้านขายส่ง (ráan khǎai-sòng). |
Ja: "Wholesale shop." Okay, what's the next word? |
Ohm: แว่นกันแดด |
Ja: This noun means "sunglasses." |
Ohm: You might also hear แว่นตากันแดด (wâen-dtaa-gan-dàaet). แว่นตา (wâen-dtaa) and the short version, แว่น (wâen), both mean "eyeglasses." In the middle is กัน (gan), meaning "to keep out" or "to resist." And the last part, แดด (dàaet), means "sunlight." |
Ja: So altogether, the word means "eyeglasses that keep out sunlight," which is a pretty good description of what sunglasses do. |
Ohm: Other items that have กัน(gan) as part of their name are เสื้อกันหนาว (sûuea-gan-nǎao). |
Ja: "Jacket," or literally "anti-cold shirt." |
Ohm: And หมวกกันน็อก (mùuak-gan-náwk). |
Ja: "Crash helmet," or literally "anti-knock hat." Okay, what's the last phrase? |
Ohm: ถนนคนเดิน |
Ja: This noun refers to a pedestrian market street, or "walking street" as it's usually translated. |
Ohm: This is a compound word made up of three parts: ถนน (thà-nǒn) is "street," คน (khon) is "people," and เดิน (dooen) is "to walk." |
Ja: So altogether that makes "people walking street." |
Ohm: Many cities in Thailand have a ถนนคนเดิน thà-nǒn (khon dooen) that takes place on a certain night each week. The street is closed to vehicle traffic, and vendors set up stalls selling a variety of merchandise and food. |
Ja: Much of the goods are souvenir-type items, or homemade products that represent the local area. So if you get a chance to go to one, it's a fun way to spend the evening. |
Ohm: I agree. |
Ja: Okay, now let's move on to the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express needs. |
Ohm: We can express our needs in Thai by using the verb ต้อง (dtâwng), which means "need to" or "must." |
Ja: This is an auxiliary verb, so it must be used in connection with another verb that follows it. |
Ohm: That's right. The general pattern is the subject, plus ต้อง (dtâwng), plus a verb, and then the object. |
Ja: Let's look at a simple sentence for an example. |
Ohm: เราต้องกินข้าว |
Ja: "We must eat rice." |
Ohm: In this sentence above, เรา (rao), meaning "we" is the subject. |
Ja: This is followed by the auxiliary verb… |
Ohm: ต้อง (dtâwng) |
Ja: ...and the main verb... |
Ohm: กิน (gin), meaning "to eat." |
Ja: Finally, we have the object of the verb… |
Ohm: ข้าว (khâao), meaning "rice." |
Ja: All the components of the general pattern don’t always have to be present. The sentence may not need an object of the verb, and it might not even need a subject, depending on the context of the conversation. |
Ohm: The only two that are absolutely essential are ต้อง (dtâwng) and another verb to follow it. |
Ja: For example... |
Ohm: ฉันต้องไปแล้ว |
Ja: Meaning, "I must go now." |
Ohm: Here, we have the subject ฉัน (chǎn), meaning "I," and this is followed by the verb pair ต้องไป (dtâawng bpai), meaning "must go." |
Ja: After that, there is no object for the verb "to go." |
Ohm: Right, there's only the adverb แล้ว (láaeo), which is used to indicate the the action needs to be performed at once. |
Ja: Can we look at one more sample sentence? |
Ohm: Sure, how about one from the conversation? ต้องส่งให้น้องสาวที่เชียงใหม่ |
Ja: "I need to send them to my younger sister in Chiang Mai." |
Ohm: This begins with the verb ต้อง (dtâwng). |
Ja: There's no subject mentioned because it's obvious to the listener that the speaker is talking about herself. |
Ohm: Next is the verb ส่ง (sòng). |
Ja: "To send." |
Ohm: And this is followed by the phrase ให้น้องสาว (hâi náawng-sǎao). |
Ja: "To my younger sister." |
Ohm: Finally, the phrase ที่เชียงใหม่ (thîi chiiang-mài), meaning "in Chiang Mai" indicates the location. |
Ja: Can we hear the whole sentence one more time? |
Ohm: ต้องส่งให้น้องสาวที่เชียงใหม่ |
Ja: "I need to send them to my younger sister in Chiang Mai." |
Ohm: Well, that's all the time we have for this lesson. |
Ja: Be sure to check out the lesson notes for more examples and explanations. |
