สวัสดีค่ะ ดิฉันกิตติยาค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii khâ. dì-chǎn Kittaya khâ)
Hi everybody! I’m Kittaya.
Welcome to ThaiPod101.com’s “Learn Thai in 3 minutes.” The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verbs ชอบ(châawp) and รัก(rák)
In this lesson, we will learn how to use มา(maa), the fourth verb in our series dedicated to the most common Thai verbs.
มา(maa) means "to come" in Thai, and we use it a lot! So let’s go!
Imagine someone comes to your office and you ask him มาหาใครคะ(maa hǎa khrai khá)?
Literally, this means "Come find who?" You’re asking “Who are you coming to see?”
[slowly] มาหาใครคะ(maa hǎa khrai khá)?
He might answer: ผมมาหาคุณสมชายครับ(phǒm maa hǎa khun sǒm-chaai khráp). Which means
“I come to see Mr. Somchai”
So let’s break down this answer:
First we had:
ผม(phǒm) which is “I” (when the male speaker is referring to himself)
Then มา(maa) which is "to come" in Thai
After that we have หา(hǎa) which is “to find” or “to look for”
And then we had คุณสมชาย(khun sǒm-chaai) which is “Mr.Somchai”
Finally, as always, we end the sentence with ครับ(khráp) to make it polite.
So, all together it is ผมมาหาคุณสมชายครับ(phǒm maa hǎa khun sǒm-chaai khráp).
In Thai, มา(maa) is exactly the same as "to come."
The basic meaning is "to go somewhere with someone", or to join other people.
It is a very common verb that you should be careful not to mix up with ไป(bpai), which means "to go to".
maa is often used to suggest an invitation to someone. If your company is organizing a party, for example, your colleague may ask you if you can join :
คุณจะมาร่วมงานเลี้ยงของบริษัทไหม(khun jà maa rûuam ngaan líiang khǎawng baaw-rí-sàt mái).
That is "Are you coming to join the company’s party?"
To answer this question is really easy, you can answer by saying “ค่ะ มาค่ะ(khâ, maa khâ)” which is “Yes, I will come.” or “ไม่ค่ะ ไม่มาค่ะ(mâi khâ, mâi maa khâ)”
The verb มา(maa) is also often used as an order or as motivational advice, as in มาด้วยกันสิ(maa dûuai-gan sì) "Come together!" Or มาเถอะ มาวิ่งด้วยกัน(maa thòe maa wîng dûuai-gan)! That is, "Come on, let’s come for a jog together!"
In Thai, we have another very useful verb that can be used to say "to come back" or "to come again". This verb is มาอีก(maa ìik), you just add อีก(ìik) at the beginning of มา(maa),
For example, if you want to say "I'll come back again tomorrow", it is just พรุ่งนี้ ผมจะมาอีก(phrûng-níi phǒm jà maa ìik)
Now it’s time for Kittaya’s Insights.
Another useful word for when you invite someone to enter a room, "Come in!" is “เข้ามาได้(khâo maa dâai)” in informal Thai. “เข้า(khâo)” means “to enter” “มา(maa)” is “to come” and finally “ได้(dâai)” means “to be able to”
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb maa to ask people to join others!
So now, our lessons series about common Thai verbs is over, and from the next lesson, we will jump into some very important interrogative Thai words!
Do you know how to ask questions starting with "What" in Thai? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Learn Thai in 3 minutes. สวัสดีค่ะ(sà-wàt-dii khâ)
