สวัสดีค่ะ ดิฉันกิตติยาค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii khâ. dì-chǎn Kittaya khâ) |
Hi everybody! I’m Kittaya. |
Welcome to ThaiPod101.com’s “Learn Thai in 3 minutes.” The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about nationality. In this lesson we will learn the verb อยู่(yùu), which means "to be located". |
This verb is also used to talk about location, to say things like "I’m at home" or "He is in the room", so it's very useful! |
When you want to know where something or someone is, you use the verb อยู่(yùu) in Thai. |
For example, when someone asks you on the phone คุณอยู่ที่ไหน(khun yùu thîi-nǎi)? This sentence means "Where are you?" in an informal way. |
Let's break it down. |
ที่ไหน(thîi-nǎi) means "Where" |
อยู่(yùu) is “to be located” |
And คุณ(khun) as you know, is the formal word for "you" |
All together it is คุณอยู่ที่ไหน(khun yùu thîi-nǎi)? |
[slowly] คุณอยู่ที่ไหน(khun yùu thîi-nǎi)? |
Answering this question is very easy! You just say ผมอยู่ที่(phǒm yùu thîi) or ดิฉันอยู่ที่(dì-chǎn yùu thîi) + the place where you are. |
ผม(phǒm) means “I” for men and ดิฉัน(dì-chǎn) is “I” for women |
อยู่ที่(yùu thîi) means “I’m at...”, then you add the place. So for example, you can say ดิฉันอยู่ที่บ้าน(dì-chǎn yùu thîi bâan) which is "I am at home" |
[slowly] ดิฉันอยู่ที่บ้าน(dì-chǎn yùu thîi bâan) |
Or if you’re a guy, you would say ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน(phǒm yùu thîi bâan) |
[slowly] ผมอยู่ที่บ้าน(phǒm yùu thîi bâan) |
Now let’s see a few other possible answers: |
"I am at the office" would be ดิฉันอยู่ที่ออฟฟิศ(dì-chǎn yùu thîi áawp-fít) |
"I am at the bank" would be ดิฉันอยู่ที่ธนาคาร(dì-chǎn yùu thîi thá-naa-khaan) |
"I am at the hospital" would be ดิฉันอยู่ที่โรงพยาบาล(dì-chǎn yùu thîi roong-phá-yaa-baan) |
Another useful expression with the verb อยู่(yùu) is when you phone someone or are looking for someone. You can say คุณ(khun)+(name)+อยู่ไหม(yùu mái)? |
If you remember, คุณ(khun) means “you,” and อยู่(yùu) is, “to be,” |
ไหม(mái) is a particle indicating a yes/no question |
So the answer will be yes or no, and we will use อยู่(yùu) to mean “yes” or ไม่อยู่(mâi yùu) to say “no”. |
Now it’s time for Kittaya’s Insights. |
อยู่(yùu) not only means to be but is also used as an auxilary verb indicating progressive tense. |
For example, |
“ทำอะไรอยู่(tham à-rai yùu)?” ทำ(tham) means to do, อะไร(à-rai) is what and อยู่(yùu) in this phrase is an auxiliary verb. So “ทำอะไรอยู่(tham à-rai yùu)?” is “what are you doing?” and the answer will be (activity)+อยู่(yùu) |
the answers can be: |
"I am working" which is ทำงานอยู่(tham-ngaan yùu) |
"I am having a meal" which is กินข้าวอยู่(gin khâao yùu) |
"I am studying" which is เรียนอยู่(riian yùu) |
In this lesson we learned how to talk about your location thanks to the verb อยู่(yùu). Next time we’ll learn how to talk about ages using the verb อายุ(aa-yú), which is "age" in Thai. So do you want to know how to ask somebody’s age? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Learn Thai in 3 minutes. สวัสดีค่ะ(sà-wàt-dii khâ) |
