สวัสดีค่ะ(sà-wàt-dii khà) Welcome back to ThaiPod101.com’s Thai in three minutes. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai.
From the previous lesson we learned, ขอบคุณค่ะ(khàawp-khun khà)“Thank you”. ขอโทษค่ะ(khǎaw-thôot khà) “I’m sorry”. ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ(mâi-bpen-rai khà) “it’s ok”.
Just imagine you are in Thailand with family…
Suddenly, your daughter got a bad stomachache from seafood!
In this lesson, we’re going to learn one of the most important survival phrases: “Excuse me. Can you speak English?” in order to find some English-speakers and ask for help.
Looks what we have here…
ขอโทษ(khǎaw-thôot) “Excuse me” or “I’m sorry”. Use this phrase in order to attract someone’s attention.
If you are male, say…
ขอโทษครับ(khǎaw-thôot khráp)
If you are female, say…
ขอโทษค่ะ(khǎaw-thôot khà)
ขอโทษ(khǎaw-thôot) “Excuse me”
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái)
means “Can you speak English?”.
Again, if you are male, say…
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมครับ(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái khráp)
If you are female, say…
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมคะ(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái khá)

“Can you speak English?”
Let’s break down this sentence…
The subject “YOU” is omitted. Then,
พูด(phûut) is a verb which means “speak”
ภาษา(phaa-sǎa) means “language”
อังกฤษ(ang-grìt) means “English”
ได้(dâai) is a Verb which means “can” OR “could”
ไหม(mái) is a word that makes a sentence becoming a question.
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมคะ(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái khá)
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái)
“Can you speak English?”
