In this lesson, we’re going to learn one of the most important survival phrases: “Excuse me. Can you speak English?” in order to find some English-speakers and ask for help. |
Looks what we have here… |
ขอโทษ(khǎaw-thôot) “Excuse me” or “I’m sorry”. Use this phrase in order to attract someone’s attention. |
If you are male, say… |
ขอโทษครับ(khǎaw-thôot khráp) |
If you are female, say… |
ขอโทษค่ะ(khǎaw-thôot khà) |
ขอโทษ(khǎaw-thôot) “Excuse me” |
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái) |
means “Can you speak English?”. |
Again, if you are male, say… |
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมครับ(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái khráp) |
If you are female, say… |
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมคะ(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái khá) |

“Can you speak English?” |
Let’s break down this sentence… |
The subject “YOU” is omitted. Then, |
พูด(phûut) is a verb which means “speak” |
ภาษา(phaa-sǎa) means “language” |
อังกฤษ(ang-grìt) means “English” |
ได้(dâai) is a Verb which means “can” OR “could” |
ไหม(mái) is a word that makes a sentence becoming a question. |
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมคะ(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái khá) |
พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม(phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai mái) |
“Can you speak English?” |
There you go! |
