| Ryan: The conversation takes place at? |
| Pim: Company’s welcome party. |
| Ryan: And the conversation is between a newcomer and an executive assistant. |
| Pim: So we’ll be using polite language. |
| Ryan: This is a dialogue that you can use whenever you meet someone for the first time. Pim will be playing an executive assistant and I will be playing a newcomer. All right, let’s listen to the conversation. |

| Ryan: All right, so Pim, let’s take a look at this dialogue and break it down. What do we have first? |
| Pim: สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii). |
| Ryan: “Hello”. Can you break it down for us? |
| Pim: สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii). สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii). |
| Ryan: And this is a polite way to say hello. It works in the day, afternoon, night, just whenever you say “hello” in English, you say สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii). in Thai. |
| Pim: And if you want to be more casual, you can say วัสดี (wàt-dii). |
| Ryan: Yeah, if you noticed, it’s the last two syllables of the word สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii). Pim, can you break that down? |
| Pim: วัสดี (wàt-dii) |
| Ryan: And what do you use วัสดี (wàt-dii) with? |
| Pim: With your close friends and family. |
| Ryan: That’s right. Essentially, it’s towards people that you don’t feel the need to show special respect to. And it also has another meaning, doesn’t it? |
| Pim: สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii) or วัสดี (wàt-dii) also mean “bye” in casual language. |
| Ryan: That’s right. So both สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii) or วัสดี (wàt-dii) can be used to say “hello” or “hi” and “goodbye” or “bye”, all right? In casual situations, you say วัสดี (wàt-dii). But as we are meeting for the first time, we need to be polite. So what’s the polite way to say “hello” again? |

| Ryan: Great. And, Pim, what do you say right after the word สวัสดีค (sà-wàt-dii)? |
| Pim: ค่ะ (khâ) |
| Ryan: Which is a polite particle for females used to end any statement. Pim, is there also a polite particle for males? |
| Pim: Of course, it’s ครับ (khráp). |
| Ryan: Then what do you say next? |
| Pim: ดิฉันชื่อพิม ตันเดชานุรัตน์ค่ะ (dì-chǎn chûue phim dtan-dee-chaa-nú-rát khâ.) |
| Ryan: “I am Pim Tandaechanurat.” Pim, let’s break it down and start with the first part which is… |
| Pim: ดิฉันชื่อ (dì-chǎn chûue) |
| Ryan: A polite way of saying “My name is…” for female speakers. So, Pim, do male speakers also use the phrase when introducing themselves? |
| Pim: Oh no. If you are a male speaker, you need to use ผมชื่อ (phǒm chûue) instead. ดิฉันชื่อ (dì-chǎn chûue) is a polite first person pronoun for females, while ผม (phǒm) is that for males. Got it? |
| Ryan: All right, so Pim, what’s your name? |
| Pim: My full name is Pim Tandaechanurat. |
| Ryan: Right. In Thai, you say the given name first, then followed by the family name, just like we do with western names. |
| Pim: And after my name, I also say ค่ะ (khâ). |
| Ryan: So, Pim, can you introduce yourself again? |
| Pim: ดิฉันชื่อพิม ตันเดชานุรัตน์ค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii khâ. dì-chǎn chûue phim dtan-dee-chaa-nú-rát khâ.) |
| Ryan: Great. And if our listeners wanted to introduce themselves, they can just follow this pattern and simply just replace the name. So I can say สวัสดีครับ ผมชื่อไรอัน ครับ (sà-wàt-dii khráp. phǒm chûue rai-an khráp). A great tool that we offer is the Review Track. | Ryan: Oh, alright. Then can you break that down for us? |
| Pim: Sure. ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก (yin-dii thîi dâai rúu-jàk). |
| Ryan: “Nice to meet you.” |
| Pim: Yes, this phrase is pretty much straight forward. When you want to say “Nice to meet you” in Thai, you say ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก (yin-dii thîi dâai rúu-jàk). |
| Ryan: Then after ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก (yin-dii thîi dâai rúu-jàk), you can say… |
| Pim: เช่นกันค่ะ (chên-gan khâ), but if you are a male, you say เช่นกันครับ (chên-gan khráp). |
| Ryan: เช่นกันค (chên-gan) means “too” in English. Can you also break this one for us? |
| Pim: เช่นกันค (chên-gan), เช่นกันค (chên-gan). ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักเช่นกันค่ะ (yin-dii thîi dâai rúu-jàk chên-gan khâ.) “Nice to meet you too.” |
| Ryan: So can you give us your introduction one more time, Pim? |
