| Jing: That’s right. Usually the story is about some love triangle. Or the girl finds out that her man is not being true to her. |
| Ohm: I think if you based your idea of Thai culture strictly off music videos you’d think that there isn’t a single guy who can be trusted. |
| Jing: Well, isn’t it true? |
| Ohm: Oh, come on. We’re not all that bad. Some men are very loyal. |
| Jing: Right, that’s just what the guy in the video said on the phone when he was really out with his gík. |
| Ohm: Well, I suppose a loyal couple would make a boring video, wouldn’t it. |
| Jing: I agree. |

| Ohm: Alright, what’s the next phrase? |
| Jing: อาจเป็นไปได้ àat bpen-bpai-dâai |
| Ohm: This means “It’s possible”. |
| Jing: Yes, that’s right. อาจ àat means “could” or “might”, and เป็นไปได้ bpen-bpai-dâai is the verb “to be possible”. |
| Ohm: So how would you use this phrase in a sentence? |
| Jing: You can start a sentence with อาจเป็นไปได้ àat bpen-bpai-dâai followed by ว่า wâa and then some statement. That gives you the meaning “It might be possible that...” |
| Ohm: OK, and what is the last phrase we want to look at? |
| Jing: นั่นแหละ nân làe |
| Ohm: This means “That’s it!” or “Quite so”. |
| Jing: Right. This can be used in casual speech to express agreement, or to draw attention to an object or idea. |
| Ohm: How does it get used in a sentence? |
| Jing: You can say นั่นแหละ nân làe just by itself as an answer to a question. Or นั่นแหละ nân làe can be followed by a more detailed description of the object being pointed out. |
| Ohm: What was the example in the conversation? |
| Jing: In the conversation, Gong said... |

| Ohm: “But Go—it’s him that is the lover on the side.” Alright. Now let’s move on to the grammar. |

| Ohm: In this lesson, you’ll learn to use ยอม yaawm with verbs, to add the nuance of "giving in". |
| Jing: ยอม yaawm is a verb that has many meanings including “to give in”, “to surrender”, “to allow”, to agree”, “to consent”, and “to submit”. |
| Ohm: Wow, that’s a lot of different definitions. But they do all seem somewhat related. How do we use ยอม yaawm ? |
| Jing: ยอม yaawm is paired with other verbs to show that an action is done with an attitude of giving in. |
| Ohm: Or in other words, with an attitude of resignation, or yielding to the will of another. |
| Jing: Yes, that’s right. When it’s paired with another verb, ยอม yaawm should come first. |
| Ohm: I think an example sentence will help show what you mean. |
| Jing: Of course. One example from the conversation was... |
| พิมยังแปลกใจอยู่ว่าเธอยอมเป็นแฟนพี่โก้ได้ยังไง |
| phim yang bplàaek-jai yùu wâa thooe yaawm bpen faaen phîi gôo dâai yang-ngai. |
| Ohm: “I’m still surprised that she ever agreed to be Go’s girlfriend.” |
| Jing: In this example, ยอม yaawm is paired with the verb เป็น bpen, meaning “to be”. And if we also include the object of the verb, the phrase becomes ยอมเป็นแฟน yaawm bpen faaen, meaning “agreed to be a girlfriend”. |
| Ohm: So the implication is that Go’s girlfriend is too good for him. She might have had many choices, but Go was persistent, and she finally gave in and agreed to be his girlfriend. |
| Jing: Yes, that’s what happened. The next example from the conversation was... |
| พิมยังคิดว่าจะชนะพี่ได้อยู่รึเปล่า หรือว่าจะยอมแพ้ |

| Jing: In this example, ยอม yaawm is paired with the verb แพ้ pháae, which means “to be defeated”. |
| Ohm: So putting them together, ยอมแพ้ yaawm pháae means “to give in to defeat” or “to accept defeat”. |
| Jing: There are many different verbs that can follow ยอม yaawm. |
| Ohm: Even the verb “to eat”? |
| Jing: Sure! Any action that is done with a sense of “giving up” can be used. Take this sentence as an example... |
