| Ohm: Hi everyone, I’m Ohm. This is Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 11 - Every Thai Girl's Dream Job. In this lesson you'll learn about using the loanword ชัวร์ "sure". |
| Jing: The conversation takes place at a bar. |
| Ohm: It’s between Gong and his friend Go. |
| Jing: The speakers are very close friends, so they’ll be using impolite Thai. |
| Ohm: Okay, let’s listen to the conversation. |

| Gong: Take her to eat dinner by the side of the river. She will be impressed by you for sure. |

| Ohm: Hey Khru Jing, what did you think you wanted to be when you were younger? |
| Jing: I wanted to be an air hostess, just like most girls in Thailand. |
| Ohm: Why is being a flight attendant every girl’s dream job? |
| Jing: They are modern and beautiful. They get to travel to many places. You have to be smart to become an air hostess too. There’s a lot of competition for jobs. |
| Ohm: So how come you didn’t end up becoming one? I know you’re smart enough. |
| Jing: Yes, I may be smart enough. But not tall enough. Unfortunately, a lot of Thai women have no hope of becoming an air hostess / because they’re just too short to put stuff in the overhead bin. |
| Ohm: That’s too bad. But look on the bright side. Now you get to work with me. |
| Jing: Umm...Yes, I’m so lucky. |

| Ohm: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is.... |
| Jing: จำ...ได้มั้ย ‘jam...dâai mái’ |
| Ohm: This pattern is used to ask “Do you remember...?” |
| Jing: That’s right. จำได้ ‘jam-dâi’ is the regular form of the verb “to remember”. However, if you want to ask about a particular thing, then the object goes in the middle between จำ ‘jam’ and ได้ ‘dâi’. |
| Ohm: I see. So basically, we split up the verb “to remember”, and put the thing that is remembered in the middle. |
| Jing: Right. Finally, the statement gets turned into a yes/no question by the particle มั้ย ‘mái’. |
| Ohm: So as an example, how would you ask “Do you remember my name?” |
| Jing: จำชื่อได้มั้ย ‘jam chûue dâai mái’ |
| Ohm: Great. Now what’s the second phrase? |
| Jing: เยี่ยมไปเลยเพื่อน ‘yîiam bpai looei phûuean’ |
| Ohm: This phrase means “That’s great buddy!” |
| Jing: Yes. That’s a good way to translate it. เยี่ยม ‘yîiam’ means “great” or “excellent”. And ไปเลย ‘bpai looei’ just adds more emphasis to this phrase. |
| Ohm: And of course เพื่อน ‘phûuean’ is the noun “friend”. Another way to translate this might be “Wow friend! That’s so awesome!” Can we hear it once more? |
| Jing: เยี่ยมไปเลยเพื่อน ‘yîiam bpai looei phûuean’ |
| Ohm: OK, what’s the last phrase we want to look at? |
| Jing: ทำอะไรสักอย่าง ‘tham à-rai sàk-yàang’ |
| Ohm: This phrase means “to do something”. |
| Jing: In this case, ทำอะไร ‘tham à-rai’ is a statement “do something”. And สักอย่าง ‘sàk-yàang’ means “anything” or “one thing”. |
| Ohm: So the whole phrase is like saying “to do any one thing.” |
| Jing: Yeah, that’s right. |
| Ohm: Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar. |
| GRAMMAR POINT |
| Ohm: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using the loanword ชัวร์ ‘chuua’, which is the English word "sure". |
| Jing: In Thai, ชัวร์ ‘chuua’ is used as an adverb at the end of a sentence to mean “for sure” or “certainly”. |
| Ohm: So it’s not used in the exact same way that we use “sure” in English. |
| Jing: No, not exactly the same. |
| Ohm: Alright. Let’s hear an example from the conversation to see how this gets used in Thai. |
| Jing: The first example from the conversation was when Gong said...งั้นก็คนจีบเยอะชัวร์ ‘ngán gâaw khon jìip yóe chuua’. |
| Ohm: “Then many people must flirt with her for sure.” |
| Jing: In this sentence, จีบ ‘jìip’ is the verb “to flirt” or “to hit on”, and เยอะ ‘yóe’ means “many”. |
| Ohm: So maybe another way to translate the sentence could be “She must certainly get hit on by a lot of guys.” |
| Jing: Yes, that’s another way to put it. |
| Ohm: What’s the next example? |
| Jing: The second example of ชัวร์ ‘chuua’ from the conversation was when Gong said... |
| เค้าจะประทับใจมึงชัวร์ |
| ‘kháoo jà bprà-tháp-jai mueng chuua.’ |
| Ohm: “She’ll be impressed by you for sure.” |
| Jing: So here, ประทับใจ ‘bprà-tháp-jai’ is an adjective that means “to be impressed”. And มึง ‘mueng’ is the impolite form of the pronoun “you”. |
| Ohm: So another way to translate this sentence would be “She’ll certainly be impressed by you.” |
| Jing: That’s right. |
| Ohm: So basically you can just attach ชัวร์ ‘chuua’ to the end of any statement to say that you are certain about it. |
| Jing: Yes, and it might be good to point out that we also have a native Thai word that does the same job. |
| Ohm: Well, that certainly makes sense. What’s the native Thai word that means “certainly”? |
| Jing: แน่นอน ‘nâae-naawn’ |
| Ohm: Alright. So how would that last example sound with แน่นอน ‘nâae-naawn’ used instead? |
| Jing: เค้าจะประทับใจมึงแน่นอน ‘kháoo jà bprà-tháp-jai mueng nâae-naawn’. |
| Ohm: “She’ll certainly be impressed by you.” And once again, how did we say this the first time? |
| Jing: เค้าจะประทับใจมึงชัวร์ ‘kháoo jà bprà-tháp-jai mueng chuua.’ |
| Ohm: “She’ll be impressed by you for sure.” |
