Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Thailand series at ThaiPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential information about Thailand, Thai Culture and Thai People. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 10 - Pattaya District |
Pattaya, or พัทยา, is one of the districts in the Chonburi province, or in Thai ชลบุรี. Today, this district is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. Since Pattaya is not far from Bangkok, many tourists, both Thai and foreign, choose this as their destination for a short weekend vacation. |
The roots of the tourism industry in Pattaya sprouted from a group of American servicemen during the Vietnam War, who would travel to Pattaya and rent a bungalow there every week to relax. More and more servicemen began joining in on the escape, which eventually turned this once quiet fishing village into Thailand's most successful beach resort, as it continues to be today. |
Pattaya is divided into four main parts. North Pattaya has many old, traditional houses, through which you can get a feel for what Pattaya life was like in old times. In Central Pattaya there are a lot of go-go bars and beer bars. South Pattaya has a "Walking Street," or in Thai ถนนคนเดินพัทยา, which is a street lined with small vendors and shops. This street is usually much busier than the other parts of Pattaya. The last main area of the village is Jomtien Beach or หาดจอมเทียน, which is relatively quiet and perfect for relaxing. This beach is also famous for water sports. |
Pattaya is a popular location for nighttime entertainment. It has an area called the Red Zone, which has many shops, pubs, bars, and other entertainment venues. The district has other attractions as well, such as the island called เกาะล้าน (Ko Lan), about seven kilometers away from Pattaya. Many tourists come here to swim, relax, snorkel, see the coral, and to enjoy water sports, parasailing, water skiing, or speedboat riding. |
