KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Anutida: งั้น…(ngán…)
John: Meaning "then; in that case".
John: This is a word and there are many uses for it.
Anutida: It is often used at the start of a sentence.
John: If it is, it means "then, in that case."
Anutida: You can use it when you want to propose a new idea or option.
John: This is a bit informal.
Anutida: Yes, it comes from the phrase ถ้าอย่างนั้น(thâa yàang nán).
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... งั้นไปนอนก่อนนะ(ngán bpai naawn gàawn ná)
John: ...which means "In that case, I'll go to bed first."
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: คุณคิดว่า...(khun khít wâa...)
John: Meaning "...do you think...?"
John: Let’s break this phrase down.
Anutida: First is คุณ(khun), this means "you." Next is คิดว่า(khít wâa).
John: This means "think that…". You usually follow this phrase with a question.
Anutida: You use it when you want to know other people’s answers or feedback.
John: When can you use this?
Anutida: You can use it in any situation.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?

John: ... which means "Do you think it will rain?"
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about setting up a meeting.
John: Let’s begin by looking at some vocabulary and phrases that will help us do this.
Anutida: การประชุม (gaan bprà-chum)
John: "meeting"
Anutida: ประชุม(bprà-chum)
John: "to hold a meeting"
Anutida: จัดประชุม(Jàt bprà-chum)
John: "to set up a meeting"
Anutida: เข้าประชุม(Khâo bprà-chum)
John: "attend a meeting"
Anutida: ผู้เข้าร่วมประชุม(phûu khâo rûuam bprà-chum)
John: "a meeting attendee, or participant." Now, we’ll hear a couple of sentences using these words.
Anutida: มีผู้เข้าร่วมประชุม 10 คน(mii phûu khâo rûuam bprà-chum sìp khon)
John: "There are 10 attendees for this meeting."
Anutida: คุณจะจัดประชุมวันไหน(khun jà jàt bprà-chum wan năi)
John: "When are you setting up a meeting?" Following on from that sentence, if we are setting up a meeting then we need to ask people when they are available.
Anutida: You can do that with a sentence like คุณว่างไหม(Khun wâang mái)
John: "Are you free?"
Anutida: Or, คุณว่างกี่โมง(khun wâang gìi moong)
John: "What time are you free?" To give a time, you say the number, and then
Anutida: โมง(moong)
John: "o’clock." So "10 o’clock" is...
Anutida: 10 โมง(sìp moong). If it’s the evening though, from 7pm to 11pm, we use ทุ่ม(thûm).
John: There’s a different word for 1am to 5am too.
Anutida: Yes, that’s ตี(dtii). And เที่ยงคืน(thîiang khuuen) is "midnight".
John: How about noon, 12pm?
Anutida: เที่ยง(thîiang).
John: Finally, if you know your meeting time is approaching, but you don’t have a watch, you can ask
Anutida: กี่โมง(gìi moong).
John: "What time is it?"

Outro

John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Anutida: แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)
