KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Anutida: กว่าที่คิด(gwàa thîi khít)
John: Meaning "than I thought, than I expected"
John: This is a phrase that you can use with an adjective.
Anutida: Yes, the structure is adjective, then กว่าที่คิด(gwàa thîi khít).
John: So you can use it to say things like "faster than I thought," or "earlier than I thought."
Anutida: Yes, you use it for things you’re surprised about. The key word is กว่า(gwàa).
John: This is a comparative that is used to compare two things.
Anutida: You can use this phrase in any situation.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... น้องสาวของเธอเด็กกว่าที่คิด(náawng-săao khǎawng thooe dèk gwàa thîi khít)
John: ...which means "Your sister is younger than I thought."
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: เร็วจัง(reo jang)
John: Meaning "so early".
John: You can switch out "early" for other adjectives.
Anutida: Yes. The structure is adjective, followed by จัง(jang).
John: This is an ending particle that puts emphasis on the adverb or adjective before it.
Anutida: You can use it for something unexpected.
John: Or when giving an opinion or comment.
Anutida: Be careful when using it with a negative adjective.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... คุณอ่านหนังสือเสร็จเร็วจัง(khun àan năng-sǔue sèt reo jang)
John: ... which means "You finished reading the book so fast."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about leaving for the day.
John: Let’s hear some words and phrases that will help in this situation.
Anutida: สวัสดี(sà-wàt-dii)
John: This usually means "hello," but in formal situations can also mean "goodbye."
Anutida: เจอกัน(jooe gan)
John: "See you!"
Anutida: เจอกันพรุ่งนี้(jooe gan phrûng-níi)
John: "See you tomorrow."
Anutida: เจอกันอาทิตย์หน้า(jooe gan aa-thít nâa)
John: "See you next week."
Anutida: ขอตัวกลับก่อน(khǎaw dtuua glàp gàawn)
John: "I’ll be going." If someone else is leaving, you might want to ask them why. So, here are some expressions that you might use when talking about reasons. You can simply ask
Anutida: ทำไม(tham-mai)
John: "Why?" Then you might hear
Anutida: เพราะ(phŕaw)
John: "Because, because of…". Another way you can ask for a reason is
Anutida: ทำไมล่ะ (tham-mai lâ)
John: "Why so?" Finally, if someone is still working when you leave, you might show some concern for them and tell them not to do something too much.
Anutida: You can use the structure อย่า(yàa), meaning "don’t", followed by a verb and then นะ(ná).
John: That last part softens the sentence. Without it, it sounds more like a command.
Anutida: Some examples are อย่าทำงานดึกมากนะคะ(yàa tham-ngaan dùek mâak ná khá)
John: "Don’t work too hard."
Anutida: อย่านอนดึกนะ(yàa naawn dùek ná)
John: "Don’t sleep too late."
Anutida: อย่าหักโหมนะ(yàa hàk-hŏom ná)
John: "Don’t overwork." There are other phrases you can use too.
Anutida: นอนบ้างนะ(naawn bâang ná)

John: "Please rest, you should rest."
Anutida: ดูแลตัวเองด้วยนะ(duu-laae dtuua-eeng dûuai ná)
John: "Please take care of yourself."
