John: More introductions this time, we just heard how to introduce someone else.
Anutida: That’s an important thing to know how to do correctly.
John: Yeah, and it’s something you might have to do frequently when having business meetings.
Anutida: Definitely.
John: Actually Anutida, I wanted to ask you about something that we touched on in the last lesson. There’s a word that we can use in Thai as a title to show respect to people, isn’t there?
Anutida: Oh, you mean khun.
John: That’s it. Can you tell us a little bit more about that?
Anutida: Khun precedes their name, for example Khun Matthew.
John: Matthew? So it’s used with first names?
Anutida: Either first names, or nicknames. Most Thai people have nicknames.
John: And it can be used in business settings too?
Anutida: It is used to address both males and females of similar or higher status in formal or business settings.
John: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Anutida: ค่ะ or ครับ (khá or khráp)
John: It is the "Thai ending particle".
John: There’s no direct translation into English for these, so we just call them ending particles.
Anutida: ค่ะ(khá) is used by women, and ครับ(khráp) by men.
John: They’re put at the end of words, phrases, or sentences.
Anutida: They are used in a formal situation or any situation that requires politeness or formality.
John: So if you’re talking to someone older, or of a higher rank, you should use these.
Anutida: That’s right.
John: Can you give us an example using these particles?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... อันนี้อร่อยดีนะคะ(an-níi à-ràuy dii ná khá)
John: ...which means "This is delicious."
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: ช่วย...หน่อย(chûuai...nàuy)
John: meaning "Could you please...?"
John: What can you tell us about this?
Anutida: ช่วย(chûuai) means "help."
John: In the context of this phrase, however, it means "could you please help?"
Anutida: หน่อย(nàuy) means "a little bit." It softens the phrase and makes it more polite.
John: You put the verb you want help with in the middle of the two words.
Anutida: Yes. ช่วย(chûuai) plus a verb plus หน่อย(nàuy).
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ช่วยถือกระเป๋าให้หน่อย(chûuai thǔue grà-bpăo hâi nàuy)
John: ... which means "Could you please hold this bag for me?"
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about how to introduce someone in a business setting.
John: Let’s look at some phrases we can use for this.
Anutida: The easiest is นี่คุณ(nîi khun) then the name.
John: "This is…." then the name. We can also say...
Anutida: คุณ___จะมาทำงานที่นี่ตั้งแต่วันนี้ (khun__ jà maa tham-ngaan thîi nîi dtâng-dtàae wan-níi).
John: "Ms./Mrs./Mr. name will work here from today onwards." In some situations, you might want to ask the person to introduce him or herself, then you can use this expression.
Anutida: คุณมะลิช่วยแนะนำตัวหน่อยครับ(khun má-lí chûuai náe-nam dtuua nàuy khráp).
John: "Mali, could you please introduce yourself?" If you’re Mali, how can you then introduce yourself?
Anutida: It might be good to say where you’re working. อยู่แผนก(yùu phà-nàaek) then the department name.
John: "I’m under… department."
Anutida: ยินดีที่ได้ร่วมงานกับทุกคนค่ะ
John: "Nice meeting you all."
Anutida: ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักทุกคนค่ะ(yin-dii thîi dâai rúu-jàk thúk-khon khâ).
John: "Nice to know you all." Finally, since this new employee or coworker you are introducing might need help, we’re going to hear some phrases that will be useful when you want to offer help to someone.
Anutida: ถ้ามีอะไรไม่เข้าใจ(thâa mii à-rai mâi khâo-jai)
John: "If you don’t understand anything."
Anutida: ถ้ามีอะไรให้ช่วย(thâa mii à-rai hâi chûuai)
John: "If you need any help."
Anutida: ถ้าต้องการความช่วยเหลือ(thâa dtâwng-gaan khwaam chûuai-lǔuea)
John: This is also "If you need any help."
Anutida: ถ้ามีคำถาม(thâa mii kham-thăam)
John: "If you have a question..."
Anutida: ถ้ามีปัญหา(thâa mii bpan-hăa)
John: "If you have a problem…"
Anutida: บอกได้นะคะ (Bàawk dâai ná khá)
John: "Please tell me…"
Anutida: ถามได้นะคะ(Thăam dâai ná khá)
John: "Please ask me…."

Outro

John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
