John: That was a very relaxed and easy way to get some time off work.
Anutida: Yes, Nick got his day off without any problems at all.
John: What can you tell us about holidays and annual leave in Thailand?
Anutida: Employees have a minimum of 13 days paid public holidays annually.
John: What if a public holiday falls on a weekend?
Anutida: Then the next working day will be a holiday to make up for it.
John: What kind of days are considered public holidays?
Anutida: Labor Day on May 1st is one.
John: How about Christmas?
Anutida: Many holidays in Thailand are related to Buddhism, so Christmas isn’t a holiday.
John: Even though the commercial sector promotes and celebrates it?
Anutida: Yes, still not a holiday. Chinese New Year isn’t either.
John: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES

Anutida: มีอะไรหรอ(mii à-rai rǎaw)
John: meaning "What is it?," "What's wrong?", "Is there anything wrong?"
John: This is a question.
Anutida: First is มี(mii), meaning "to have" or "there is/are," then อะไร(à-rai), meaning "what" or "something" or "anything" and then หรอ (rǎaw).
John: This is the question particle. You can use this question when you want to know what is going on.
Anutida: This is informal, so it’s used with friends or those younger than you.
John: Is there a way to make it more polite?
Anutida: Yes, you can add the polite ending particle. For example, มีอะไรหรอคะ(mii à-rai rǎaw khá) or มีอะไรหรอครับ(mii à-rai rǎaw khráp).
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ดูเครียดๆนะ มีอะไรหรอ(duu khrîiat khrîiat ná mii à-rai rǎaw)
John: ...which means "You look stressed. What is it?"
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: วันจันทร์ที่จะถึง(wan jan thîi jà thǔeng)
John: meaning "This coming Monday."
John: Let’s look at this phrase.
Anutida: First is วันจันทร์(wan jan), which means "Monday," followed by ที่จะถึง(thîi jà thǔeng).
John: That means "the coming…"
Anutida: You can use this phrase with other days of the week.
John: It’s usually used to talk about appointments or schedules.
Anutida: It can be used by anyone at any time.
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... วันอาทิตย์ที่จะถึงนี้ฉันจะไปอเมริกา(wan aa-thít thîi jà thǔeng níi chăn jà bpai à-mee-rí-gaa)
John: ... which means "This coming Sunday, I am going to America."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.
