| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Pim: So khun Ryan, when you were studying in Thailand did you use the university library much? |
| Ryan: Well, it was a good place to find books, but often I’d have to check the books out and read them elsewhere. |
| Pim: Why is that? Did the library close early? |
| Ryan: No. It was because many times I could never find a seat. Even all the empty seats I found would be reserved by someone leaving a notebook or something at that space. So I’d usually go to a coffee shop or Dunkin’ Donuts to study. |
| Pim: Really? Dunkin’ Donuts? |
| Ryan: Yeah, but it was super popular with the university students too. During exam week it was hard to even find a free space to sit and have a cup of coffee in the morning. |
| Pim: Well, the donuts are pretty tasty there. |
| Ryan: Indeed they are. Ok, now let’s move on to the vocabulary. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Pim: ...เกี่ยวกับ... (...gìiao gàp...() |
| Ryan: This phrase means “about” or “regarding”. It follows a noun and then is followed by another word or phrase that specifies a subject matter. |
| Pim: Right. For example, I could say ดิฉันจะดูหนังเกี่ยวกับเมืองไทย |
| Ryan: “I’m going to watch a movie about Thailand.” This could be used a lot in questions, too. For example, how would I ask “What’s this book about?” |
| Pim: The classifier for “book” is เล่ม. So you have to say หนังสือเล่มนี้เกี่ยวกับอะไร. |
| Ryan: OK. And next is a single word... |
| Pim: ต้อง... (dtâwng…) |
| Ryan: “must” or “need to”. It will come right before another verb in the sentence. Can you think of an example of how to use it khru Pim? |
| Pim: คุณต้องทำการบ้าน (khun dtâwng tham gaan-bâan) which means “You must do your homework.” |
| Ryan: Alright. And finally the last phrase is one I think I’ve heard people yelling at political rallies. |
| Pim: ออกไป (àawk bpai) |
| Ryan: “to go out” or “to leave”. It can be used as a verb in a sentence, such as... |
| Pim: เขาต้องออกไปโรงเรียน (khǎo dtâwng àawk bpai roong-riian) |
| Ryan: “He must leave the school.” And then it can also function by itself, spoken with a harsh voice, to tell someone to “Go away!” or “Get out!” Ok, khru Pim, can you pretend that you’re really angry with someone and you want to tell them to “Get out!” |

| Ryan: Oh, that was a little scary. I’ll make sure I stay on your good side. Now let’s move on to the grammar section. |
Lesson focus |

| Ryan: The focus of this lesson is more prepositions for locations. |
| Pim: The word ข้าง (khâang) means “side”. And there are several prepositions we can make by combining it with other words. ใน nai means “in”, so ข้างใน (khâang nai) means “inside”. “Out” is นอก nâawk, so can you guess how to say “outside”? |
| Ryan: Is it ข้างนอก (khâang nâawk) ? |
| Pim: Exactly. We can also use ข้าง (khâang) to say “right side,” ข้างขวา (khâang khwǎa) and “left side,” ข้างซ้าย (khâang sáai). |
| Ryan: There are also a few common prepositions that don’t contain the word “side” in their English versions, but are constructed in Thai using ข้าง (khâang). If you imagine that you have a cube with 6 sides. We already covered “right side” and “left side” so the are 4 more we need to learn. |
| Pim: ข้างหน้า (khâang nâa) |
| Ryan: “in front” |
| Pim: ข้างหลัง (khâang lǎng) |
| Ryan: “behind” |
| Pim: ข้างบน (khâang bon) |
| Ryan: “above” or “upstairs”, and |
| Pim: ข้างล่าง (khâang lâang) |
| Ryan: “below” or “downstairs” |
| Pim: If you were meeting your good friend to see a movie, but you didn’t know where your friend was, you might call them with your cell phone and ask casually อยู่ไหน “Where are you?” You friend might answer back อยู่ข้างหน้าโรงหนัง |
| Ryan: “I’m in front of the cinema.” What if your friend already went inside the cinema? How would they answer then? |
| Pim: “inside” is ข้างใน, so they’d say อยู่ข้างในโรงหนัง |
| Ryan: What if I was going to meet my friend for coffee instead. We’re supposed to meet at a Starbucks in one of the big shopping malls in Bangkok, but I’m not sure if I’m even on the right floor. So I ask somebody who works in the mall ร้านสตาร์บัคส์อยู่ที่ไหนครับ “Where’s the Starbucks shop?” |
| Pim: If it was on the floor above you, they might say สตาร์บัคสอยู่ข้างบน |
| Ryan: “Starbuck’s is above.” |
| Pim: But if it was on the floor below, then they’d say สตาร์บัคสอยู่ข้างล่าง |
| Ryan: “Starbuck’s is below.” |
| And how about for a review from lesson 1 of the Beginner Series, what if the Starbuck’s was on the same floor but way down at the other end of the mall? |
| Pim: Well in that case, they might say ร้านสตาร์บัคส์อยู่ที่โน่น |
| Ryan: “Starbuck’s is way over there.” |
