| Oh, hi! Sorry, I’m studying. Welcome back to Thai Top Words! I’m Jay and today, we’ll be doing top 10 school subjects. Okay, let’s get started. |
| 1. ภาษาไทย (phaa-săa thai) "Thai" |
| The first word of course - ภาษาไทย (phaa-săa thai) "Thai". |
| ภาษาไทยยากมาก (phaa-săa thai yâak mâak) "Thai is very difficult." |
| Is it? Okay the word - ภาษาไทย (phaa-săa thai), ภาษา (phaa-săa) means “language” and ไทย (thai) means “Thai” so together, “Thai language”. So do you like Thai language or do you think it is difficult? Just let me know. |
| 2. วิชาศิลปะ (wí-chaa sǐn-lá-bpà) "art" |
| เด็ก ๆ ชอบเรียนวิชาศิลปะ (dèk dèk châawp riian wí-chaa sǐn-lá-bpà) "Kids like studying art." |
| I like it too. It was my favorite subject in school actually. So for this word - วิชาศิลปะ (wí-chaa sǐn-lá-bpà), วิชา (wí-chaa) means “subject” and ศิลปะ (sǐn-lá-bpà) means “art”. So if you want to refer to any subject, you put the word วิชา (wí-chaa) in front to make it a subject. Let’s say that the word that we learned before, ภาษาไทย (phaa-săa thai), if we want to be more specific like Thai language subject, you’ll say - วิชาภาษาไทย (wí-chaa phaa-săa thai). วิชาภาษาไทย (wí-chaa phaa-săa thai) means “Thai subject”. |
| 3. วิชาประวัติศาสตร์ (wí-chaa bprà-wàt-dtì-sàat) "history" |
| วิชาประวัติศาสตร์น่าเบื่อ (wí-chaa bprà-wàt-dtì-sàat nâa bùuea) "History is boring." |
| Is it? So if you want to refer to ประวัติศาสตร์โลก (bprà-wạ̀t-dti-ṣàat lôok) or “world history”, you put the word โลก (lôok) which means “world” at the end, after the word ประวัติศาสตร์โ (bprà-wạ̀t-dti-ṣàat) so it becomes ประวัติศาสตร์โลก (bprà-wạ̀t-dti-ṣàat lôok) “world history”. If you want to be more specific like world history subject, you put the word วิชา (wí-chaa) in front so it becomes วิชาประวัติศาสตร์โลก (wí-chaa bprà-wạ̀t-dti-ṣàat lôok). So now you know how to form this word. So if you are studying, let’s say, Thai history subject, it will be, วิชาประวัติศาสตร์ไทย (wí-chaa bprà-wạ̀t-dti-ṣàat thai). If you’re studying American history, you can say - วิชาประวัติศาสตร์อเมริกา (wí-chaa bprà-wạ̀t-dti-ṣàat à-mee-rí-gaa). |
| 4. วิชาภูมิศาสตร์ (wí-chaa phuu-mí-sàat) "geography" |
| อาจารย์คนนี้สอนวิชาภูมิศาสตร์เก่งมาก (aa-jaan khon níi sǎawn wí-chaa phuu-mí-sàat gèng mâak) "This teacher is good at teaching geography." |
| Actually, geography is my least favorite subject so far. I just feel like it’s very difficult. So by the way guys, what is your least favorite subject? |
| 5. วิชาชีววิทยา (wí-chaa chii-wá-wít-thá-yaa) "biology" |
| วิชาชีววิทยาคือการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับสิ่งมีชีวิต (wí-chaa chii-wá-wít-thá-yaa khuue gaan sùek-sǎa gìiao-gàp sìng-mii-chii-wít) "Biology is the study of living organisms." |
| So I mean if can’t remember the word ชีววิทยา (chii-wá-wít-thá-yaa), you can shorten it by just saying ชีวะ (chii-wá). I think that’s how kids say it because it’s more convenient. So rather than saying the whole word, ชีววิทยา (chii-wá-wít-thá-yaa), you can just say ชีวะ (chii-wá). For example, “I like biology.” so rather than saying ฉันชอบชีววิทยา (chǎn châawp wí-chaa chii-wá-wit-thá-yaa), you can say ฉันชอบวิบาชีวะ (chǎn châawp wí-chaa chii-wá). |
| 6. วิชาเคมี (wí-chaa khee-mii) "chemistry" |
| ห้องทดลองคือสถานที่เพื่อการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับวิชาเคมี (hâwng thót-laawng khuue sà-thǎan-thîi phûuea gaan riian-rúu gìiao-gàp wí-chaa khee-mii) "The laboratory is a place to learn about chemistry." |
| I think this one is quite easy you see because we use the word เคมี (khee-mii). I think it comes directly from the English “chemistry” so chemistry in Thai is เคมี (khee-mii) so pretty similar. |
| 7. วิชาฟิสิกส์ (wí-chaa fí-sìk) "physics" |
| วิชาฟิสิกส์ยากพอ ๆ กับวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa fí-sìk yâak phaaw phaaw gàp wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) "Physics is as difficult as math." |
| 8. วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) "math" |
| วิชาโปรดของฉันในโรงเรียนคือวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa bpròot khǎawng chăn nai roong riian khuue wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) "My favorite subject in school is math." |
| วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat), you can shorten it by saying just วิชาคณิต (wí-chaa khá-nít) so just คณิต (khá-nít) is all right. วิชาคณิต (wí-chaa khá-nít) “math” or you can just say วิชาเลข (wí-chaa lêek). เลข (Lêek) means “number” so you can use that too like วิชาเลข (wí-chaa lêek) also means “math”. วิชาคณิต (wí-chaa khá-nít) also means “math” or วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat). Actually, there is this belief that if you are Asian then you are very good at math. I don’t know if it’s true, but as the belief goes like my favorite subject besides art is mathematics too. Yeah, I don’t know why. |
| 9. ภาษาอังกฤษ (phaa-săa ang-grìt) "English" |
| เขาเรียนภาษาอังกฤษที่อเมริกา (khăo riian phaa-săa ang-grìt thîi à-mee-rí-gaa) "He learned English in America." |
| I think the word งกฤษ (ang-grìt), งกฤษ (ang-grìt) means “English” so if you want to refer to UK, you’ll say ประเทศอังกฤษ (bprà-thêet ang-grit̀), ภาษาอังกฤษ (phaa-săa ang-grìt) "English language" also like English language. I think the word งกฤษ (ang-grìt) comes from the English word Anglo, English which means like, I don’t know like English right? So this is trying to make you driven by it in an easy way. |
| 10. วิชาพละศึกษา (wí-chaa phá-lá sùek-sǎa) "physical education" |
| ฉันชอบวิชาพละศึกษามาก (chăn châawp wí-chaa phá-lá sùek-sǎa mâak) "I like physical education very much." |
| You can shorten this word by saying just วิชาพละ (wí-chaa phá-lá) “physical education”. |
