You know that tongue twister words in Thai are very difficult because we have five different tones and there we have a lot of consonants and everything. So even a Thai like me, I feel it’s very difficult. So let’s try it together, okay. |
| 1. เช้าฟาดผัดฟัก เย็นฟาดฟักผัด (cháo fâat phàt fák yen fâat fák phàt) “Eat stir-fried squash in the morning; Eat squash stir-fried in the evening.” |
| Okay, I did it. |
| 2. ยักษ์ใหญ่ไล่ยักษ์เล็ก (yák yài lâi yák lék) “A bigger giant is chasing a smaller giant.” |
| This one is not so difficult I think like it’s shorter but the tone is a bit difficult. |
| 3. ชามเขียวคว่ำเช้า ชามขาวคว่ำค่ำ (chaam khĭiao khwâm cháo chaam khăao khwâm khâm) “The green bowl is turned upside down in the morning; The white bowl is turned upside down at night.” |
| All of these tongue twister words are doable like you can do it if you do it slowly but when you do it fast, it’s very difficult, like, just now I tried to do it slowly but if I have to talk very fast, I don’t think I can do it. |
| This sentence is difficult to say it out because there’s this word คว่ำ (khwâm) which is called consonant blends like you have two consonants together and you have to articulate the two consonants at the same time like คว่ำ (khwâm) is kh- and w- together. So it’s คว่ำ (khwâm) not ค่ำ (khâm) or anything. |
| 4. ระนอง-ระยอง-ยะลา (rá-naawng rá-yaawng yá-laa) “Ranong-Rayong-Yala (province names)” |
| So the English is also Ranong-Rayong-Yala which are three provinces in Thailand. It’s very difficult if you try it faster like Ranong-Rayong-Yala, Ranong-Rayong-Yala. Okay, I can’t do it already. Yeah. And there is no meaning. This is just three names that kind of rhyme together. |
| 5. ไหมใหม่ไม่ไหม้ ใช่มั๊ย (măi mài mâi mâi châi mái) “New silk doesn't burn, does it?” |
| The next one is actually the fun one. ไหมใหม่ไม่ไหม้ ใช่มั๊ย (măi mài mâi mâi châi mái) “New silk doesn’t burn, does it?” |
| So if you notice this tongue twister sentence is actually the same, they use the same consonant like ม ม้า (maaw máa) but with different tones. So, ไหมใหม่ (măi mài) “new silk” ไม่ไหม้ (mâi mâ) “doesn’t burn” ใช่มั๊ย (châi mái) “does it?” |
