Hello guys, welcome back to Thai Top Words. I am Jay and today, we will be doing five sentence patterns for beginners. Okay, let’s get started.
1. ฉันชื่อ (...) (chăn chúue (...)) "My name is...."
ฉันชื่อเจ (chăn chúue Jee) "My name is Jay."
So the first word ฉัน (chăn) means I and the second word ชื่อ (chúue) means name. So together, it will be my name and then you add your name at the end to form this sentence.
So ฉันชื่อเจ (chăn chúue Jee) “My name is Jay.”
Let’s say, your name is like Anne. ฉันชื่อแอน (chǎn chûue aaen) “My name is Anne.” And so on.
2. (...) ค่ะ/ครับ ((...) khâ/khráp) "I am...."
เจค่ะ (Jee khâ) "I am Jay."
For example, so ค่ะ (khâ) and ครับ (khráp) are polite articles in Thai, and ค่ะ (khâ) is for girls and ครับ (khráp) is for guys. So, if you want to say your name, like, if a girl asked you, like, คุณชื่ออะไร (khun chûue à-rai) “what’s your name?” And you want to say, “I am Jay” I just say เจค่ะ (Jee khâ) because I am a girl. If you are a guy, let’s say your name is Peter, you could say ปีเตอร์ครับ (bpii-dtôoe khráp) “I am Peter.”
3. (...) อยู่ที่ไหน ((...) yùu thîi năi) "Where is...?"
เธออยู่ที่ไหน (thooe yùu thîi năi) "Where are you?"
You can use this sentence with people or places as well. So if you want to ask for toilet, toilet in Thai is ห้องน้ำ (hâawng nám).
So you can say, ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน (hâawng nám yùu thîi nǎi) “Where is the toilet?”
4. ฉันอยู่ที่ (...) (chăn yùu thîi (...)) "I live in [A(noun)]."
ฉันอยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ (chăn yùu thîi grung thêep) "I live in Bangkok."
Actually, this sentence pattern can also mean I am at or I am in somewhere. Let’s say that you are in the train station and the train station in Thailand is สถานีรถไฟ (sà-thǎa-nii rót fai), you can say, ฉันอยู่ที่สถานีรถไฟ (chǎn yùu thîi sà-thǎa-nii rót fai) “I am at the train station.”
5. ฉันชอบ (...) (chăn châawp (...)) "I like... (verb or noun)."
ฉันชอบฟังเพลง (chăn châawp fang phleeng) "I like listening to music."
For this sentence pattern, it can be a verb or a noun. Let’s say that you like doing something. “I like singing” ฉันชอบร้องเพลง (chǎn châawp ráawng phleeng)
“I like cooking” ฉันชอบทำอาหาร (chǎn châawp tham aa-hǎan)
Or it could be a noun as well. Let’s say that “I like dogs” ฉันชอบสุนัข (chǎn châawp sù-nák)
“I like cats” ฉันชอบแมว (chǎn châawp maaeo)
or “I like flowers” ฉันชอบดอกไม้ (chǎn châawp dàawk-mái).
