| Hello guys, welcome back to Thai Top Words. I am Jay and today, we will be doing 10 Ways to Say Hello. Okay, let’s get started. |
| 1. อรุณสวัสดิ์ (à-run sà-wàt) "Good morning." |
| อรุณ (à-run) means morning and สวัสดิ์ (sà-wàt) means hello. So together, it’s good morning. However, this word we don’t usually use in informal situations. Let’s say that you go to school, you meet your friends, you meet your teachers, you say hello to your parents, you normally don’t use this word because it sounds a bit formal. You just use สวัสดี (sà-wàt-dii) like normal hello. |
| 2. สวัสดี (sà-wàt-dii) "Hello." |
| If you are a girl, you put ค่ะ (khâ) at the end. So it will be สวัสดีค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii khâ) and ครับ (khráp) for guys. So it would be สวัสดีครับ (sà-wàt-dii khráp) Even though this is normal and it’s most common like hello word but if you are very close to someone, you can use other words as well like หวัดดี (wàt-dii) with a shortened word from สวัสดี (sà-wàt-dii) or ดี (dii) but don’t use it to people who are older than you or like in a situation where you – they require to have a formal like greeting. |
| 3. ไม่ได้เจอกันตั้งนาน (mâi dâi jooe gan dtâng naan) "Long time no see." |
| You can use this phrase to anyone but if you want to be polite or to be formal, then you just add the word, the particle words ค่ะ (khâ) and ครับ (khráp) at the end. So, ไม่ได้เจอกันตั้งนานค่ะ mâi dâi jooe gan dtâng naan khâ) for girls and ไม่ได้เจอกันตั้งนานครับ (mâi dâi jooe gan dtâng naan khráp) for guys but if they are your friends, you are close, then you don’t need to add particles at the end. |
| 4. คุณสบายดีมั๊ย (khun sà-baai dii mái) "How are you?" |
| If you want to reply to this question, you can say สบายดี (sà-baai dii) I am fine. |
| ก็โอเคนะ (gâaw oo-khee ná) I am okay or ไม่ค่อยสบาย (mâi khâauy sà-baai) I am not really fine. |
| 5. เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง (bpen yàang rai bâang) "How's it going?" |
| เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง (bpen yàang rai bâang) or คุณเป็นยังไงบ้าง (khun bpen yang ngai bâang) Actually they have the same meaning. So when you greet – you ask someone this question, the person can refer it as, how have you been or how are you? So normally when I have to answer this question, I just say, ก็โอเคนะ (gâaw oo-khee ná) I am okay. And that’s all. That’s it. |
| 6. วันนี้เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง (wan níi bpen yàang rai bâang) "How's your day?" |
| If you notice, อย่างไรบ้าง (yàang rai bâang) we have seen it quite a lot through this lesson อย่างไรบ้าง (yàang rai bâang) means how. |
| So if you see a phrase with this, a sentence or phrase with this like อย่างไรบ้าง (yàang rai bâang) it means that they want to ask you how. Either how have you been, how is it going and so on. |
| 7. ว่าไง (wâa-ngai) "What's up?" |
| This phrase is very informal. So be careful when you use it. I think it’s okay to use it with your close friends or your friends, your peers but don’t use it with your superior or people who are older than you or someone that you respect. |
| 8. สวัสดีตอนบ่าย (sà-wàt-dii dtaawn-bàai) "Good afternoon." |
| But normally we don’t use that. I mean, we just use สวัสดี (sà-wàt-dii) like you know just hello like hello at any time of the day but you might have seen it too you know like books or novels. They might use this kind of phrase. |
| 9. ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก (yin dii thîi dâi rúu jàk) "It's nice to meet you." |
| Even though the English sentence seems common to use, however, this sentence in Thai ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก (yin dii thîi dâi rúu jàk) it’s nice to meet you, it seems a bit unnatural to me because I don’t think that Thai people use it that often. Maybe they use it but not as common or often as in English. |
| 10. เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง (bpen yàang rai bâang) "How's everything?" |
| If you notice, how are you that we learned before, in Thai, it is เป็นยังไงบ้าง (bpen yang ngai bâang) How’s everything? เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง (bpen yàang rai bâang) |
| Actually, they are the same sentence. ยังไงบ้าง yang ngai bâang) or อย่างไรบ้าง (yàang rai bâang). Actually the same word. It’s just the way that you say it out, you know. |
