Hello, everyone! Welcome back to Thai Top Words. I’m Jay and today, we’ll be doing top 10 must-know vocabulary for the restaurant. Okay, let’s get started!
1. พนักงานเสิร์ฟชาย (phá-nák-ngaan-sòoep-chaai) “waiter”
พนักงานเสิร์ฟชายกำลังเอาเมนูมาให้ (phá-nák-ngaan-sòoep chaai gam-lang ao mee-nuu maa hâi) “A waiter is bringing a menu.”
2. พนักงานเสิร์ฟหญิง (phá-nák-ngaan-sòoep-yǐng) “waitress”
พนักงานเสิร์ฟหญิงคนนี้บริการดีมาก (phá-nák-ngaan-sòoep-yǐng khon níi baaw-rí-gaan dii mâak) “A waitress in this restaurant serves very well.”
3. สั่งซื้อ (sàng-súue) “to order”
ขอสั่งาหารด้วยครับ (khǎaw sàng aa-hăan dûuai khâ) “May I order, please?”
Please? So if you are a guy then you change the word ค่ะ (khâ) at the end to ครับ (khráp).
ขอสั่งาหารด้วยครับ (khǎaw sàng aa-hăan dûuai khráp)
4. เครื่องดื่ม (khrûueang dùuem) “drink”
รับเครื่องดื่มอะไรดีคะ (ráp khrûueang dùuem à-rai dii khá) “What would you like for a drink?”
5. ขนมหวาน (khà-nǒm-wǎan) “dessert”
ขนมหวานของร้านนี้อร่อยมาก (khà-nŏm wăan khǎawng ráan níi à-ràauy mâak) “The dessert at this restaurant is very delicious.”
What is your favorite dessert? So my favorite Thai dessert is mango sticky rice. Have you heard of it? Well, it’s actually the sticky rice with mangoes and top up with coconut milk. The taste is very interesting because you can get a sour and sweet taste from the mango and a salty taste from the coconut milk. It’s very delicious. If you haven’t tried it, please try it if you have a chance.
6. หัวหน้าพ่อครัว (hǔua-nâa-phâaw-khruua) “chef”
หัวหน้าพ่อครัวของที่นี่มีชื่อเสียงมาก (hŭua nâa phâaw khruua khǎawng thîi nîi mii chûue-sĭiang mâak) “The chef here is very famous.”
7. อาหารจานด่วน (aa-hǎan jaan dùuan) “fast food”
ฉันไม่ชอบกินอาหารจานด่วน (chăn mâi châawp gin aa-hǎan jaan dùuan) “I don't like eating fast food.”
But the word อาหารจานด่วน (aa-hǎan jaan dùuan), even I feel that it’s very common to use, like, we don’t say อาหารจานด่วน (aa-hǎan jaan dùuan), we just say the slang, fast food, like we just use the word “fast food” in Thai. So if I want to say that I don’t like eating fast food, I would say ฉันไม่ชอบกิน fast food (chăn mâi châawp gin fast food), like that’s how we say it like commonly.
8. ร้านอาหาร (ráan-aa-hǎan) “restaurant”
ร้านอาหารนี้ตกแต่งสวยงาม (ráan aa-hăan níi dtòk dtàaeng sŭuai ngaam) “This restaurant is decorated beautifully.”
You can use the word ร้านอาหาร (ráan-aa-hǎan) for “restaurant”, but another word we also use as well is ภัตตาคาร (phát dtaa khan). However, ภัตตาคาร (phát dtaa khan) is more of a high-quality restaurant; whereas, ร้านอาหาร (ráan-aa-hǎan) is a generic word for like any restaurant like high, medium or low classes or like anything at all that sells food.
9. อร่อย (à-ràwy) “delicious”
อาหารอร่อยมั๊ยคะ (aa hăan à-ràauy mái khá) “Is the food delicious?”
So if you think that it is delicious, you say อร่อยคะ (à-ràwy khá) for girls and อร่อยครับ (à-ràwy khráp) for guys. If you think that, nah, not so good, you could say ไม่อร่อย (mâi à-ràauy). ไม่ (mâi) is “not,” so ไม่อร่อยคะ (mâi à-ràwy khá) / ไม่อร่อยครับ (mâi à-ràwy khráp), or you just keep quiet.
10. อาหารจานหลัก (aa-hǎan-jaan-làk) “main course”
จะรับอะไรเป็นอาหารจานหลักคะ (jà ráp à-rai bpen aa hăan jaan làk khá) “What would you like to order for the main course?”
I think this applies to like the restaurants like high-class or high-end restaurants that serve restaurant food, like most of the Thai food, we don’t have main course, I mean like we have main course of course...main course of course, but we don’t have the appetizer like we don’t have different courses of food, you know what I mean? Like appetizer and then, I don’t know what’s in the middle and then main course and then dessert. We only like have main course and then dessert, that’s all.
We are done for today, yay! We have survived today’s lesson. So what is your favorite เครื่องดื่ม (khrûueang dùuem) or “drink”, ขนมหวาน (khà-nǒm-wǎan) “dessert” or อาหารจานหลัก (aa-hǎan-jaan-làk) “main course”? Let me know in the comment below and don’t forget to like this video and subscribe to our channel. See you next time. Bye-bye! This is a thumbs up for me, okay. That’s for me for saying it.

Hello Shinonixilirrahasvol,

Thank you for question. Yes, "mai-dtrii" does not used with low class. "question word" does not spell with "maa-maa" , here is correct spelling ไหม(rising tone) while มั้ย(high tone) is a speaking, just to show the sound of high tone when we speak, which is incorrect spelling. Yes, middle class can produce high tone, with help of tone mark "maai-dtrii". Hope that’s help. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a good day.

Within the pathway for writing the Thai script it teaches the tonal mark "Mai Dtrii" isn't used with low class consonants. Yet the question word "mai" starting with maaw-maa has "Mai Dtrii" placed above, and the consonant seems to act as though it were a middle class consonant thus producing high tone. How is it this is possible? Thanks in advance!

Hello Oliver,

Thank you for question. When first syllable have Middle or high class plus hidden "a" vowel hidden, second syllable would follow tone rule of the first initial syllable. Hope that make sense for you. Please feel free to let me know if you have questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a nice day.

I don't understand the tone rules for อร่อย, maybe you could help here? I find different RTGS representations of อร่อย on this site, such as: a-ròi, à-ràuy and à-ràwy. So I would conclude that อร่อย has two syllables and (from the last two representations), that both syllables are low tone. How does อ produce a low à? And how does ร่อย produce a low tone? ร is low consonent and together with mai ek it should make a falling tone? Tnx for your help!

Hello Tony,

Thank you for comment. We're really apologized for misunderstanding. In Thailand we still used "อาหารจานด่วน aa-hǎan jaan dùuan fast food" because not everyone understand English. On the news may used both so more people understand what is "fâat-foot(d)" in Thai. Please feel free to let me know if you have questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a nice day.

Claims "must know" in title and then instructor says, we don't really use this, we just say "fast food"....How is a phrase you don't actually use considered "must know"? This whole lesson had the feel of a classroom assignment for a beginning instructor student to get the experience of making a video.
