Hello! Welcome back to Thai Top Words. Iโm Jay and today, we will be doing 20 travel phrases you should know. Okay, letโs begin! |
1. เธเธญเนเธเธเธเธตเนเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (khaฬaw phฤaen thiฬi dรขi mฤi) โCould I get a map?โ |
Well, I donโt know about you guys, but for me actually, I donโt ask people for a map because even if I have one, I donโt know how to read it. I donโt know like I normally use my phone, the Google map, and then follow the direction strictly rather than having a physical map and read and get lost. |
2. เธเธธเธเธเธนเธเธ เธฒเธฉเธฒเธญเธฑเธเธเธคเธฉเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (khun phรปut phaa-sวa ang-grรฌt dรขi mรกi) โDo you speak English?โ |
3. เธกเธตเธฃเธเธเธฑเธชเธเธฒเธเธชเธเธฒเธกเธเธดเธเนเธเนเธฒเธกเธฒเนเธเนเธกเธทเธญเธเธเนเธฒเธเธกเธฑเนเธข (mii rรณt baฬt jร ak sร -nฤam bin khรขo maa nai muueang bรขang mรกi) โIs there a bus from the airport to the city?โ |
If you happen to go to Bangkok and then you land at Suvarnabhumi Airport, I think the easiest way is not to get a bus. Iโm not even sure if thereโs a bus there, but you can easily take a train directly from the airport to the city center. |
4. Wi-Fi เธเธฃเธตเธซเธฃเธทเธญเนเธเธฅเนเธฒ? (Wi-Fi frii ruฬue bplaฬo) โIs the Wi-Fi free?โ |
In Thailand, I believe that if you go to a coffee shop which there are plenty of it in the city, most of them will provide you with free Wi-Fi, but recently, I think they get smarter so that you have to buy a cup of coffee to get a password or anything. |
5. เธขเธฑเธเธกเธตเธซเนเธญเธเธเธฑเธเธงเนเธฒเธเธญเธขเธนเนเนเธซเธกเธเธฐ (yang mii haฬawng phรกk wรขang yuฬu mฤi khรก) โDo you have any vacancies?โ |
So you use this phrase often when you call for a reservation at a hotel and you want to know if they have any vacant room left for you. |
6. เธเธญเธขเนเธฒเธขเธซเนเธญเธเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (khaฬaw yรกai haฬawng dรขi mรกi) โCould I move to a different room?โ |
7. เธเธฑเธเธเธญเธเนเธญเธฒเนเธงเน (chฤn jaawng ao wรกi) โI have a reservation.โ |
This phrase, you can use it at a restaurant or a hotel or anything that you have reserved. |
8. เธเธญเนเธกเธเธนเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธขเธเธฐ (khaฬaw mee-nuu dรขi mรกi khaฬ) โCould we have the menu, please?โ |
So if you are a girl like me then you put เธเธฐ (khรก) at the end. If you are a guy then it would be เธเธญเนเธกเธเธนเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธขเธเธฃเธฑเธ (khaฬaw mee-nuu dรขi mรกi khrรกp). |
9. เธเธฑเธ/เธเธกเธเธญเธเธดเธฅเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (chaฬn/phoฬm khaฬaw bin dรขi mรกi) โCould I have the bill?โ |
เธเธฑเธ/เธเธกเธเธญเธเธดเธฅเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (chaฬn/phoฬm khaฬaw bin dรขi mรกi) โCould I have the billโ or the check? |
So this is something that you get before you pay it. In Thai, we donโt have this word thatโs why we use the English word โbillโ, but the pronunciation of course is different. We call it เธเธดเธฅ (bin) like B-I-N, (bin). |
But, if you want the receipt which is something that you get after you have really paid then in Thai, it is เนเธเนเธชเธฃเนเธ (bai-seฬt). So you can ask the same question, just change the noun. You can say เธเธฑเธเธเธญเนเธเนเธชเธฃเนเธเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (chaฬn khaฬaw bai-seฬt daฬi maฬi) โCould I have the receipt?โ |
10. เธเธฑเธเนเธเนเธเธฑเนเธงเธฅเธดเธชเธ (chaฬn phaฬae thรนua-lรญ-sลng) โI'm allergic to peanuts.โ |
11. เธเธญเธเนเธณเธซเธเนเธญเธข (khaฬaw nรกm naฬauy) โWater, please.โ |
If you want to make it softer then you better put particles at the end; either formal particles, polite particles like เธเธฐ (khรก) or เธเธฃเธฑเธ (khrรกp), or just a normal particle to make the phrase seems softer, like เธเธฐ (na). |
เธเธญเธเนเธณเธซเธเนเธญเธขเธเธฐ (khaฬaw nรกm naฬauy khรก), เธเธญเธเนเธณเธซเธเนเธญเธขเธเธฃเธฑเธ (khรก nรกm naฬauy khrรกp), เธเธญเธเนเธณเธซเธเนเธญเธขเธเธฐ (khaฬaw nรกm naฬauy na). |
But I think the most natural way to ask is to put the word เนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (daฬi mรกi) like โcould I...โ |
เธเธญเธเนเธณเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธขเธเธฐ (khaฬaw nรกm naฬauy daฬi mรกi khรก) โCould I get water, please?โ |
12. เธญเธฑเธเธเธตเนเธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเน (an niฬi raa-khaa thรขo rร i) โHow much is this?โ |
If you go to Thailand, you will use this question a lot because in Thailand, there are a lot of street stalls that do not have a price tag so you have to ask the seller the price rather than being able to read it from the price tag yourself. |
13. เธเธฑเธเนเธญเธฒ 10 เธญเธฑเธ (chฤn ao sรฌp an) โI'd like ten of these.โ |
Iโll give you a little trick. In Thailand, if you go there and you buy there a lot like 10 pieces of anything, then you can just ask for a little bit of discount. I think they will give it to you. |
14. เธเธฑเธเธญเธขเธฒเธเนเธเนเธญเธฑเธเธเธตโโเน (chฤn yร ak daฬi an nii) โIโd like this.โ |
Okay, since I just gave you a little trick, Iโll give you one more trick. This sentence, โI would like this. I want this.โ เธเธฑเธเธญเธขเธฒเธเนเธเนเธญเธฑเธเธเธตโโเน (chฤn yร ak daฬi an nii), is okay if you talk with your friends or someone that accompany you to buy something; your family, your mom, but itโs better not to say it out loud that a seller could hear you so they will know that, okay, you really like it, you really want it, and they will be more strict on you in terms of price. |
15. เธฅเธเนเธซเนเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (lรณt hรขi naฬauy daฬi mรกi) โCould you give me a discount?โ |
Okay, here it comes, the most useful word to go shopping in Thailand; เธฅเธเนเธซเนเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (lรณt naฬauy daฬi mรกi) โCould you give me a discount?โ |
To make it softer or to make it more polite, maybe probably they could give you more discount, you can add, as always, เธเธฐ (khรก) and เธเธฃเธฑเธ (khrรกp) at the end. |
เธฅเธเนเธซเนเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธขเธเธฐ (lรณt hรขi naฬauy daฬi mรกi khรก) for girls, and เธฅเธเนเธซเนเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธขเธเธฃเธฑเธ (loฬt hรขi naฬauy daฬi maฬi khrรกp) for guys. |
16. เธชเธเธฒเธเธตเธฃเธเนเธเธญเธขเธนเนเธเธตเนเนเธซเธ? (sร -thฤa-nii rรณt-fai yuฬu thiฬi naฬi) โWhere is the train station?โ |
In Bangkok, we have two companies for trains which are BTS and MRT. So if you canโt remember this word เธชเธเธฒเธเธตเธฃเธเนเธ (sร -thฤa-nii rรณt-fai) or โtrain stationโ, you can just use the word MRT or BTS when you ask for direction. For example, MRT เธญเธขเธนเนเธเธตเนเนเธซเธ? (MRT yuฬu thiฬi naฬi?) โWhere is the MRT?โ. BTS เธญเธขเธนเนเธเธตเนเนเธซเธ? (BTS yuฬu thiฬi naฬi?) โWhere is the BTS?โ. |
17. เธฃเธฑเธเธเธฑเธเธฃเนเธเธฃเธเธดเธเธกเธฑเนเธข (raฬp baฬt-khee-diฬt mรกi) โDo you take credit card?โ |
In Thailand, I think every stores in department stores take credit cards, but then itโs better to have cash with you because you know that in Thailand, there are a lot of street stalls that only take cash. |
18. เธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฐ เธเนเธฒเนเธเธขเธชเธฒเธฃเธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเนเธเธฐ (khaฬaw-thoฬot naฬ khaฬ khaฬa-dooi-saฬan raa-khaa thaฬo-raฬi khaฬ) โExcuse me, what is the fare?โ |
Thatโs for girls so if itโs a guy then you just change the เธเธฐ (khรก) to เธเธฃเธฑเธ (khrรกp). |
19. เธเธธเธเธเนเธงเธขเธเนเธฒเธขเธฃเธนเธเนเธซเนเธเธฑเธเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (khun chuฬuai thaฬai-ruฬup haฬai chaฬn naฬauy daฬi mรกi) โCould you take a picture of me, please?โ |
20. เธเธตเนเนเธเนเธเธฃเธเธเธฑเธชเนเธเธชเธเธฒเธกเธเธดเธเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธข (niฬi bpen rรณt baฬt bpai sร -nฤam bin chรขi mรกi) โIs this the right bus for the airport?โ |
I think there are two words for the word โbusโ in Thai. Itโs either เธฃเธเธเธฑเธช (rรณt baฬt) or เธฃเธเนเธกเธฅเน (rรณt mee). เธฃเธเธเธฑเธช (Rรณt baฬt) is a day bus or night bus like from one location directly to another location like from maybe from the airport to the city center. But if itโs a regular local bus that stop at every bus stop, then we call it เธฃเธเนเธกเธฅเน (rรณt mee), so know the difference and use it right. |
Okay, we are done for todayโs lesson. So what phrases do you like the most? For me, it would be เธฅเธเนเธซเนเธซเธเนเธญเธขเนเธเนเธกเธฑเนเธขเธเธฐ (lรณt haฬai naฬauy daฬi mรกi khรก) โCould you give me a discount?โ I use it very often. So how about you guys?
