| Ryan: Okay. In that case, I'll go to Wat Pho today. |
| Ryan: Well I think I’d have to agree with the recommendation of the guesthouse staff in this conversation. The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho really is an impressive sight, wouldn’t you say so Khru Pim? |
| Pim: Umm...I think it probably is, but I have to admit that I haven’t actually ever been to Wat Pho. |
| Ryan: Really? You should check it out. The Reclining Buddha is 46 meters long. It’s huge! And can you guess what the most interesting part is? |
| Pim: Umm...Is it the Buddha’s smile? |
| Ryan: Well, the face of the Reclining Buddha is a particularly well proportioned, but actually I was thinking of his feet. |
| Pim: What is so amazing about the Buddha’s feet? |
| Ryan: The soles of the Buddha’s feet are decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay showing the designs of 108 auspicious scenes. It’s really amazing. |
| Pim: OK, I’ll definitely have to go and see it sometime. |
| Ryan: And actually it isn’t just the Reclining Buddha. The whole temple is really interesting to see. It’s the largest temple in Bangkok. There are over 1,000 statues, many smaller worship halls, and lots of pagodas. You could easily spend the whole morning just at Wat Pho. |
| Pim: It sounds like a good plan. |
| Ryan: OK, now let’s move on to the vocabulary. |

| Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Pim: The first phrase we’ll look at is.... |
| Pim: ไปเที่ยว (bpai thîiao) |
| Ryan: This means either “to go on an outing” or “to go on a trip”. It can be used to say that you are going on vacation and traveling to a different city or country. But it can also be used to mean you are just going out for fun for a few hours. Let’s hear it one more time. |
| Pim: ไปเที่ยว (bpai thîiao) |
| Ryan: The next phrase is... |
| Pim: มีชื่อเสียง (mii chûue-sǐiang) |
| Ryan: This means “to be famous”. |
| Pim: Right. มี (mii) is the verb “to have” and ชื่อเสียง (chûue-sǐiang) means “fame”. So if you have fame that means you’re famous. |
| Ryan: Well, that makes sense. And we can break down the word “fame” into two parts too, can’t we? |
| Pim: Yes, we can. ชื่อ (chûue) means “name”, and เสียง (sǐiang) means “sound” or “voice”. So you can remember it if you think a famous person is one whose name is often heard. |
| Ryan: OK. And the last phrase is... |
| Pim: ไปมาแล้ว (bpai maa láaeo) |
| Ryan: This means “went already”, but more specifically it means “went to and have returned from already.” |
| Pim: Yes, that’s right. ไป (bpai) is the verb “to go”, and มา (maa) is the verb “to come”. แล้ว (láaeo) means “already”, which indicates the completion of the action. |
| Ryan: So ไปมาแล้ว (bpai maa láaeo) is used when talking about somewhere you went that you’ve since come back from. This is kind of clumsy to say in English, so we usually leave one half of the statement implied. |
| Pim: When you want to include the name of the location, it goes between ไป (bpai) and มา (maa) in the sentence. For example, I could say...คุณแม่ไปตลาดมาแล้ว (khun-mâae bpai dtà-làat maa láaeo.) |
| Ryan: “Mother went to the market already.” or more exactly “Mother already went to the market and came back.” And what was the word for “market” in that sentence? |
| Pim: ตลาด (dtà-làat) |
| Ryan: OK, and the whole sentence once again... |
| Pim: คุณแม่ไปตลาดมาแล้ว (khun-mâae bpai dtà-làat maa láaeo.) |
| Ryan: Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar section. |
| Ryan: The focus of this lesson’s grammar is two different uses of the word แล้ว (láaeo.) |
| Pim: แล้ว (láaeo) is one of the most useful Thai words. Its most general meaning is “already”. So when แล้ว (láaeo) is placed after a verb, it indicates that the action happened already. |
| Ryan: And this is one of the basic ways used to show past tense in Thai. So, for example, what is the word for “to teach”? |
| Pim: สอน (sǎawn) |
| Ryan: Then to change “teach” into “already taught” would be... |
| Pim: สอนแล้ว. (sǎawn láaeo) So can you try to make this sentence in Thai?... “The teacher taught it already.” |
| Ryan: Well, “teacher” is ครู (khruu) or คุณครู (khun-khruu). So I guess it’d be... คุณครูสอนแล้ว (khun-khruu sǎawn láaeo) |
| Pim: That’s right. Now how about this one. The verb “to know” is รู้ (rúu). So how would you say “I know that already.” ? |
| Ryan: OK, I got it ผมรู้แล้ว (phǒm rúu láaeo.) |
| Pim: Very good. |
| Ryan: Alright, so far these have been pretty basic sentences with just implied objects. But how do we use แล้ว (láaeo) when the verb takes an object? |
| Pim: When the object of the verb is included in the sentence, then แล้ว (láaeo) goes after the object and will often be the last word of the sentence. For example... |
| ดิฉันซื้อรถคันใหม่แล้ว (dì-chǎn súue rót khan mài láaeo.) |
| Ryan: “I bought a new car already.” So in this sentence ซื้อ (súue) is the verb “to buy” and รถคันใหม่ (rót khan mài) means “a new car”. Well, we said we were going to discuss two important uses of láaeo, so what is the second one? |
| Pim: Another use of แล้ว (láaeo) is to mean “so”, “next”, or “then”. When used for this, แล้ว (láaeo) will come at the beginning of a sentence or clause. For example.. |
| แล้วพรุ่งนี้คุณจะทำอะไรคะ (láaeo phrûng-níi khun jà tham à-rai khá.) |
| Ryan: “So what are you going to do tomorrow?” How about we break this sentence down a little. |
| Pim: Sure. The very first word is แล้ว (láaeo.) Whenever you see this at the beginning of a sentence you know that the meaning has to be “so”, “then”, or “next”. |
| Ryan: So it’s used to move on to the next topic or move forward chronologically. What was after that? |
| Pim: พรุ่งนี้ (phrûng-níi) which means “tomorrow”. And then the nucleus of the sentence was คุณจะทำอะไร (khun jà tham à-rai) |
| Ryan: “What will you do?” So the whole thing once more. Listeners please repeat after Khru Pim. “So what are you going to do tomorrow?” |
| Pim: แล้วพรุ่งนี้คุณจะทำอะไรคะ (láaeo phrûng-níi khun jà tham à-rai khá) |
| Ryan: Ok, That’s all for this lesson. |

2. ผมชอบวังของคุณ, I like your palace. doesn't sound right. I would recommend saying ผมชอบบ้านคุณมาก เหมือนวังเลย
3. ช่างเป็นผลงานชิ้นเอก, What a masterpiece. not heard it before, we would say เป็นผลงานที่ยอดเยี่ยมมาก/เป็นผลงานที่ดีมาก
เป็นผลงานชิ้นเอกของเขา / เป็นผลงานชิ้นเอกของสตีฟ จอบส์ mostly use for showing who is this great piece of work belong to.
4. เห็นลูกสุนัขจรจัดทำให้ใจฉันแตกสลาย, Seeing stray puppies break my heart. ** this one is great.

All those sentences are good. คุณว่ายน้ำเป็นไหม is exactly what you want for "Do you know how to swim?" on the other hand, คุณว่ายน้ำได้ไหม is asking for physical ability and availability at the time you ask the person to swim, if they can do it or no. 👍Hope that helps. 3. ไวไฟรหัสผ่านอะไรครับ, What is the wifi password? (I want to say in 1 sentence, is this correct now?)
4. คุณว่ายน้ำเป็นไหม when translated by google it says "Can you swim?". How do I say "Do you know how to swim?" I'm asking about someone's knowledge or skill in swimming. It's not just about physical ability alone.

ผมกับพระนอน - me and or with the reclining buddha. is incorrect. Thai people do not get this joke.
I want to take a rest instead of work. => ผมจะไปนอน
คุณวิ่งเป็นครั้งคราวหรือเปล่า - Do you run occasionally or not? to make it sound more natural we would say: คุณไปวิ่งบ้างไหมครับ
***เป็นครั้งคราว is not used in a question term.
รหัสผ่าน wifi คืออะไร - What is the wifi password? we would just say มี wifi ไหมครับ, รหัสผ่านอะไรครับ / ขอรหัสผ่าน wifi ครับ

I wouldn't recommend using โปรด unless you are writing a sign, making formal announcements and warning such as โปรดช่วยกันรักษาความสะอาด, ท่านผู้โดยสารโปรดทราบ... "Attention, all passengers!", โปรดใช้ความระมัดระวังขณะก้าวออกจากรถ "Please use caution when exiting the vehicle." "Please mind the gap between train and platfrom." Hope that helps. I sometimes have trouble understanding the meaning of เลย especially in a context like here: ยังไม่รู้เลย...I have even asked native speakers, but they all seem to have different opinions on it 😄 Is it one of those things native speakers just know how to use? And what do you think?

I know what the word มี means but I'm a bit confused about its usage in the sentence ที่วัดโพธิ์มีพระนอนที่มีชื่อเสียงมากเลยนะคะ. Seems as if it translates to "at wat pho have reclining buddha that have famous very". How come it's used here? or could it be left out?
