คนขายตั๋วเรือเฟอร์รี่: พรุ่งนี้เลยค่ะ (phrûng-níi looei khâ.) |
Ryan: It's tomorrow. |
แดน: โอ้....ขี้เกียจรอ ซื้อหมวกใบใหม่ท่าจะง่ายกว่า งั้นไปเลยก็แล้วกัน (ôo...khîi-gìiat raaw. súue mùuak mài thâa jà ngâai gwàa. ngán bpai looei gâaw láaeo gan.) |
Ryan: Oh...I don't want to wait. It's probably easier just to buy a new hat. All right then, I'm going. |
Pim: Hey Khun Ryan, have you ever been to Koh Phi Phi? |
Ryan: Yes. Actually I visited Koh Phi Phi the year before it was hit by the big tsunami. It’s such a beautiful little island. It’s really sad to think about the destruction that took place there. |
Pim: Yeah, I guess Koh Phi Phi was one of the places in Thailand that was hardest hit. |
Ryan: Right. The reason it was hurt so bad is because of the island’s geography. It is shaped kind of like a dumbbell, with a hill on each side connected by a flat piece of land in the middle. That strip of land in the middle has a very low elevation, and that’s also where the majority of the island’s development is. So when the series of giant waves swept over, everything in the middle was submerged under several meters of water. |
Pim: Wow, that’s pretty scary. Do you think it could happen again? |
Ryan: Well, the earthquake that caused that tsunami was the 3rd strongest ever recorded. I don’t think it’s likely that it will be hit by anything so powerful anytime soon. But as a precaution there is now an early warning system in place. |
Pim: So when you visit Koh Phi Phi, or other places on the coast, it might be a good idea to figure out what the quickest way to higher ground would be in an emergency. |
Ryan: Yes, I guess that would be a smart thing to do. Just like checking the fire escape route when you check into a new hotel room. OK, now let’s move on to the vocabulary. |
Ryan: The first word we shall see is: |

Pim: ง่าย (ngâai) [natural native speed] |
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is.... |
Pim: ขี้เกียจรอ (khîi-gìiat raaw) |
Ryan: This means “I’m too impatient to wait”. |
Pim: ขี้เกียจ (khîi-gìiat) is the adjective “lazy”, and รอ (raaw) is the verb “to wait”. |
Ryan: Now, with most other verbs we’d translate ขี้เกียจ (khîi-gìiat) as “too lazy to...” But “too lazy to wait” sounds rather odd in English, since waiting doesn’t really require the use of energy. So, for ขี้เกียจรอ (khîi-gìiat raaw), we might say that the speaker is too “mentally lazy” or “impatient” to wait. How could we use it in a sentence? |
Pim: รถเมล์ (rót mee) means a “bus”, รถแท็กซี่ (rót tháek-sîi) means a “taxi”, and เรียก (rîiak) is the verb “to call”. Therefore, I could say... |
ฉันขี้เกียจรอรถเมล์ เรียกรถแท็กซี่ดีกว่า (chăn khîi-gìiat raaw rót mee rîiak rót tháek-sîi dii gwàa) |
Ryan: “I’m too impatient to wait for the bus. I’ll call for a taxi instead.” This was actually two sentences. Can we hear them again one by one? |
Pim: ฉันขี้เกียจรอรถเมล์ (chăn khîi-gìiat raaw rót mee) |
Ryan: “I’m too lazy (or too impatient) is wait for the bus.” |
Pim: เรียกรถแท็กซี่ดีกว่า (rîiak rót tháek-sîi dii gwàa) |
Ryan: “Calling a taxi is better.” Now the next phrase is... |
Pim: ท่าจะ (thâa jà) |
Ryan: This means “possibly”, “probably” or “perhaps”. It should come before a verb or adjective in the sentence. What was the example from the conversation? |
Pim: ซื้อหมวกใหม่ท่าจะง่ายกว่า (súue mùuak mài thâa jà ngâai gwàa) |
Ryan: “It’s probably easier just to buy a new hat.” We can break this sentence up into two parts also. First was... |
Pim: ซื้อหมวกใหม่ (súue mùuak mài) |
Ryan: “Buying a new hat” And that was followed by... |
Pim: ท่าจะง่ายกว่า (thâa jà ngâai gwàa) |
Ryan: “probably will be easier”. And the last phrase we’ll look at is... |
Pim: อีกห้านาที (ìik hâa naa-thii) |
Ryan: This means “in another five minutes”. อีก (ìik) can mean “another” or “additional”. And then we can just follow it with some amount of time in order to say things like “in another ten minutes” or “after another two weeks”. How about a few examples using different time units? |
Pim: Alright. How about อีกสองวัน (ìik sǎawng wan) |
Ryan: “In two more days” |
Pim: อีกสามอาทิตย์ (ìik săam aa-thít) |
Ryan: “In another three weeks” |
Pim: อีกสิบนาที (ìik sìp naa-thii) |
Ryan: “In ten more minutes”. OK, and now let’s move on to the grammar section. |
Ryan: The focus of this lesson’s grammar is using ขี้ (khîi) + verbs or adjectives to make new adjectives. |
Pim: The word ขี้ (khîi) by itself means “excrement”. But it’s also used as a prefix before verbs or adjectives to make new adjectives. ขี้ (khîi) adjectives describe the subject as having the characteristic or tendency of the word that follows ขี้ (khîi). |
Ryan: In the conversation we had the word ขี้ลืม (khîi-luuem), which meant “forgetful”. So that comes from adding ขี้ (khîi) to the verb “to forget”, ลืม (luuem). And we can use ขี้ (khîi)adjectives just like any other adjective, right? |
Pim: That’s right. In Thai adjectives follow nouns. So, to say “forgetful person” it would be คนขี้ลืม (khon khîi-luuem). Can you guess the meaning of this sentence... |
เขาเป็นคนขี้ลืมจริงๆ (khăo bpen khon khîi-luuem jing jing) |
Ryan: “He’s really a forgetful person.” |
Pim: Very good! Another adjective we can make with ขี้ (khîi) is ขี้โมโห (khîi). โมโห (moo-hŏo) is an adjective that means “mad” or “angry”. So ขี้โมโห (khîi moo-hŏo) means “with a tendency to be mad or angry”. |
Ryan: You could also translate ขี้โมโห (khîi moo-hŏo) as “irritable” or “grumpy”. |
Pim: Yes, you could. Again, we put adjectives after nouns, so ผู้ชายขี้โมโห (phûu-chaai khîi moo-hŏo) would mean “grumpy man”. Can you guess then what this sentence means... |
ดิฉันไม่ชอบผู้ชายขี้โมโห (dì-chăn mâi châawp phûu-chaai khîi moo-hŏo) |
Ryan: “I don’t like irritable men.” |
Pim: Right again! |
Ryan: So there are quite a few ขี้ (khîi) adjectives that are commonly used aren’t there? |
Pim: Yes. We just had ขี้ลืม (khîi-luuem) for “forgetful” and ขี้โมโห (khîi moo-hŏo) for “irritable” or “easily angered”. Another one that we heard in the conversation was ขี้เกียจ (khîi-gìiat) |
Ryan: “lazy”. How about some more? |
Pim: No problem. ร้อน (ráawn) means “hot”, so there is ขี้ร้อน (khîi ráawn) |
Ryan: “sensitive to hot weather” |
Pim: The opposite is ขี้หนาว (khî năao) |
Ryan: “sensitive to cold weather” |
Pim: เหนียว (nĭiao)means “sticky”. Can you guess what ขี้เหนียว (khîi nĭiao)means? |
Ryan: Well, at the beginning you said ขี้ (khîi) can mean “excrement”. So wouldn’t ขี้เหนียว (khîi nĭiao) be a “sticky turd”? |
Pim: Well, only if you read it as two separate words. But as a single adjective ขี้เหนียว (khîi nĭiao) means “stingy” or “cheap”. |
Ryan: Ah, I see. So คนขี้เหนียว (khon khîi nĭiao) is a person who is stuck to their money and won’t give it up easily. |
Pim: Exactly. |
Ryan: There are several more ขี้ (khîi) adjectives that we didn’t have time to cover, so be sure to check out the notes for this lesson. |
Ryan: Ok, That’s all for this lesson. |
Pim: มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ (mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá) |
Ryan: Do you have any questions? |
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (láaeo phóp gan mài khâ) |
Ryan: See you next time. |
