In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around you. Now, a dictionary is a great idea, but don't forget that you can use the Thai language to learn in a more fun and interactive way. Today, we're going to cover a way for you to hold on to the information you get. |
In Thai, "Can you write it down please?" is chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi. |
chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi |
Don’t forget to be polite by adding khá and khráp at the end of the phrase. |
Therefore, women say chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khá. |
chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khá |
And men say, chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khráp. |

Let’s break it down by syllable: chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khá. |
chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khráp |
Let’s hear it one more time: chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khá. |
chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi khráp |
The first word, chûuai means "help," followed by khǐian, which means "write down." The next word hâi nàwy means "please do" while dâai mǎi means "can" as a question. "Khá" and "khráp" are added to make this phrase more polite. Let's recap a little bit. We have "help" "write down" "please do" "can" or in Thai - chûuai khǐian hâi nàwy dâai mǎi. |
Altogether, this phrase is equivalent to the English phrase "Can you write it down please?" |
Once you have it, you might like to know how to pronounce it. In Thai, "Can you pronounce this please?" is chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi |
chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi |
Of course, you should be polite when you ask people for a favor. |
Therefore, women say chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khá |
chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khá |
And men say chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khráp. |
chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khráp |
Let’s break it down by syllable: chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khá. |
chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khráp. |
Let’s hear it once again, chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khá. |
chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi khráp. |
The first word, chûuai, means "help," followed by àan which means "pronounce" or "read." The next word, hâi, means "give favor," followed by fang, which means "listen." The next word, dâai mǎi, is "can" as a question. Khá and khráp are added to make this phrase more polite. |
Altogether, we have "help" "pronounce" "give favor" "listen" "can" or in Thai, chûuai àan hâi fang dâai mǎi. |
And this is equivalent to the English phrase "Can you pronounce this please?" |
Like many other languages, Thai words can be pronounced in more than one way to have more than one meaning. Pay attention to the tone of the word as it could mean something else if you get it wrong. But if you put them together in a phrase, tones are not crucial. However, a good thing is that Thai people love when you wanted to learn more of their language so they will be more than happy to teach you whatever you want to know! |
