Lesson focus
|
In this lesson, we'll introduce to you a question related to, "Can you take my picture?" which is in Thai is khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi |
Let’s break it down by syllable: khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi. |
There are cases when you may want to take a picture of someone or with someone, but before doing so, you'd like to ask for permission. |
In Thai, "May I take your picture?" is khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi |
Let’s break it down by syllable: khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi. |
The first word, khǎaw, means "may" or "asking for," followed by thàai rûup which means "taking picture" as we already learned in the previous lesson. |
The next word, dâai mǎi, means "can" as asking a question. |
Altogether, this phrase is equivalent to the English phrase "May I take your picture?" |
And of course, don’t forget to be polite when you ask people a favor. That means for women, we say khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi khá. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi khá |
And men say khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi khráp. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi khráp |
Now, again, you may notice that I didn't add any "you" anywhere in the phrase. That's because this phrase already implied that you like to take a picture of "someone." In the same time, you can use this phrase when asking to take a picture of something as well. That means the phrase for khǎaw thàai rûup dâai mǎi also means "May I take a picture here?" |
There may also be times when you want to take a picture with someone. In this case, you could ask by saying khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi |
Let’s break it down by syllable: khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi. |
Now, let’s hear it once again, khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi. |
Don’t forget to be polite by adding khá and khráp. |
Therefore, women say khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi khá. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi khá |
And men say khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi khráp. |
khǎaw thàai rûup dûuai dâai mǎi khráp |
Now, the phrase is very similar to the phrase we just learned, except that I added the word dûuai in the middle of the phrase. This word dûuai means "together." Adding this word make this phrase mean "Can I take a picture with you?" |
