Lesson focus

In this lesson, we'll introduce you to another useful phrase for the place where you can get that something specific. Today's phrase is, "Is there a specific place near here?"
First, we need a place. So let's use the word ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa, which means "apparel shop."
Let's break it down by syllable: ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa
Now, let's hear this once again: ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa
The first word ráan means "store" or "shop," followed by khǎai, which means "sell." The next word sûuea-phâa means "clothing." Altogether, ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa means an "apparel shop."
Now, let's get to the phrase, shall we? In Thai, "Is there any apparel shop near here?" is thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi.
thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi
Let's break it down by syllable: thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi
As usual, you wanted to sound polite when you ask people a question.
Therefore, women say, thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi khá
thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi khá
And men say, thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi khráp
thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi khráp
The first word thǎaeo níi means "this area," followed by mii, which means "have." The next word, you already know the meaning. ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa means an "apparel shop," followed by mǎi, which indicate that this phrase is a question. Khá or khráp is added to make this phrase more polite. Therefore, altogether, this phrase literally means "Is this area has an apparel shop?"
Now, to ask for a different place, we can just replace the word for an apparel shop with any other word, and the phrase works just fine. Let's try ráan-aa-hǎan
ráan-aa-hǎan
which in Thai, means "restaurant".
In Thai, "Is there any restaurant near here?" is thǎaeo níi mii ráan-aa-hǎan mǎi khá and thǎaeo níi mii ráan-aa-hǎan mǎi khráp
The only thing that change is the thing you are looking for.
In this case, it's ráan-aa-hǎan, which mean "restaurant."
Let’s break down the word and hear it one more time: ráan-aa-hǎan
ráan-aa-hǎan
There are other words that might come in handy when you are in a foreign country. But since you've been through enough today, I am going to teach you an easy word. If you are looking for a supermarket, just replace the word in the phrase we just learned with supermarket. Yes, supermarket, an English word. Thai language sometimes borrow words from the English language. So you can just use supermarket.
Another word that is a word for convenience store, the most common word for the 24 hours convenience store is 7-Eleven. Yes, it is a specific brand. But you can just use it when you mean any 24 hours convenience store. Convenient, isn't it?

Outro

Okay. To close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase, and you are responsible of saying it loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so chôok-dii khâ, that's mean "good luck" in Thai.
Remember, khâ is for women, and khráp is for men. Okay. Here we go.
"Is there any apparel shop near here?" for women - thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi khá
thǎaeo níi mii ráan khǎai sûuea-phâa mǎi khá

"Is there any restaurant near hear?" for women - thǎaeo níi mii ráan-aa-hǎan mǎi khá
