| Ryan:"Oh, how awful!" or "that’s terrible!" "ซวยแล้ว (suuai láaeo)" or "ไม่ได้การแล้ว(mâi dâai gaan láaeo)" also have the same meaning. Among these words, "ซวยแล้ว(suuai láaeo)" is the most casual one and is usually used between friends, while "ไม่ได้การแล้ว(mâi dâai gaan láaeo)" is preferred in more formal situations. |

| Pim:There are two uses of "ใช่(châi)." "ใช่(châi)" can be used when you want to say "yes" in yes/no questions. For example, Ryan, are you male? |
| Ryan:"ใช่ครับ(châi khráp)," which means "yes!" What if I want to say "no?" What should I say then? |
| Pim:That’s easy. As I mentioned in the previous lessons, in Thai we just add the word "ไม่(mâi)" in front of any words to negate them. So we say "ไม่ใช่(mâi châi)" for negative answers. Ryan, are you female? |
| Ryan:"ไม่ใช่ครับ(mâi châi khráp)," which means "no!" |
| Pim:Good! And you can also say "ใช่(châi)" when you want to express your agreement. For example, "อาหารจานนี้เผ็ดมาก(aa-hăan jaan níi phèt mâak)" means "This dish is very spicy." |
| Ryan:"ใช่ครับ(châi khráp)" "That’s right." So, if I don’t think that this dish is spicy, can I say "ไม่ใช่ครับ(mâi châi khráp)?" |
| Pim:Literally, that’s correct. However, we usually say "ไม่นี่(mâi nîi)" instead of "ไม่ใช่(mâi châi)" to soften the answer. |
| Ryan:Okay, let’s move on to the grammar section. |
| GRAMMAR POINT |
| Ryan:In this lesson, we’ll learn about the usage of "มี(mii)," which can either mean "to have" or "there is/are." |
| Pim:That’s right! It is very simple to use. Just like other verbs in Thai, you just place "มี(mii)" after the subject and follow it with the object. For example, "ปากกา(bpaak-gaa)" is a "pen." So, "ดิฉันมีปากกาค่ะ(dì-chăn mii bpàak-gaa khâ)" means? |
| Ryan:"I have a pen." Okay. Repeat after "khruu" Pim. "I have a pen." |
| Pim:"ดิฉันมีปากกาค่ะ(dì-chăn mii bpàak-gaa khâ)" [pause] |
| Ryan:So, from what we have learned from previous lessons, we can add "ไหม(mái)" at the end of a sentence to turn it into a question. Is it correct to say "คุณมีปากกาไหมครับ(khun mii bpàak-gaa mái khráp)," meaning "do you have a pen?" |
| Pim:"ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)" "That’s right." And if you do, you should say… |
| Ryan:"ผมมีปากกาครับ(phŏm mii bpàak-gaa khráp)." But if I don’t have one, how should I answer? |
| Pim:Again, we just add "ไม่(mâi)" before "มี(mii)" to negate it. Ryan, "คุณมีพี่สาวไหมคะ(khun mii phîi-săao mái khá)," which means "Do you have an older sister?" If you don’t, you say… |
| Ryan:"ผมไม่มีพี่สาวครับ(phŏm mâi mii phîi-săao khráp)," meaning "No, I don’t." "Khruu" Pim, can we hear these sentences again? |

How would you ask your friend whether he or she has a boyfriend or a girlfriend? [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is? |
